among the sie-tators. The pretty de
fendant bowed to the jury and smiled
When she entered the room.
Attorney L'terhart, her counsel, op
ened tho questioning of Mrs. DoSauI-lcs-
She replied in a low, soft voice, with
a slight accent. She looked like a
school girl, answering questions in
class.
She began by describing her meet
ing wnn utviaitiies m 'eibrunry, 1911
"He wanted to marry me," she re
plied. And then she told of her marriage
iu -no e-xaie lootoau star in fans-
lliat picture of me," she said
was taken the day before our wed
ding."
bno told of how DeSaulles continual
tojly demanded money of her after their
marriage, uesaullc-s, she said, bought
her a revolver for her protection whilo
he was away on a political campaign.
Uteu-hart produced a revolver and
handed it to Mrs. DeSaulles for iden
tification. She refused to take it, shud
dered and turned away.
Mrs. DeSaulles tlten described . her
husband's neglect of :her in South Both
U-hem after their child was born.
"Ho was home only for woek mwin "
she said. "It wasn't very nice."
in Washington, she said, her husband
showed her a picture of an actress
with "love to Jack" inscribed on it.
Uterhart read tho jury a letter Mrs.
DeSaulles wroto her husband from
South BeitbJehem.
I feel so lonely now, precious,"
she wrote. "I don't" know what to do.
Her Fig'ut for Life
Minoola, L.. I., Nov. 20. Bianci De
Snubes faced the supreme test of her
tragic lite today when she went on
tho witness stand to bare her soul, to
tell tho jury why and how sho killed
her divorced husband. John L. DeSaul
les, wealthy clubman and Yale nthloto.
lho little Chilean woman planned to
reveal everything, from tho day she
met the drtuliing young American at the
races in the Vina Del Mar. Chile, until
she shot him at his country home at
iiORiyn, L. I., when he refused to givo
up their little boy.
Jimnct Attorney Weeks was rendv
ior a bitter fight against somo of this
testimony. He is preparing for a gruel
ing cross examination.

uo sum.
Another fight was in sight over tho
intention of Defense Counsel Uterhart
to read to the jury all testimony tak
en in tho DeSaulles divorce case.
Before coming to court today Mrsl
DeSiuillos put in her orders for a full
Thanksgiving dinner for every one of
the seventy five prisoners in the Nas
sau county jaiL
A big crowd was in court, many of
the men behind tho spectators' railing
being in khaki soldiers from Camp
Mills and the Mineola aviation camp
nearby. , ;'- - - 4
Mrs. DeSaulles spent Sunday in bod,
resting for today's nerve racking test.
Her physicians.' declared she was very
weak and tliat she might collapse on
thn stand.
Mrs. DeSaulles identified a check for
ifcl.T.OAfl !io lmrl pivpn Iier frirrTinr htm-
band in August, 19193.
uterhart exhibited checks totalling
more than $1G,000 given DeSaulles in
1914
"One afternoon I was on Mr. Heck
sher's motorboat," Mrs. DeSaulles told
tho jury. "I sow DeSaulles on the
Dnko . of Manchester's yacht with
many funny looking girls."
She said DeSaulles sold her automo
bile and pocketed th-r money.
Uterhart read from an articw In
Town Topics describing a racy houso
party DeSaulles and the Duke of Man
chester staged.
" When I . saw that I felt terribly
scandalised," the witness said.
"In London I found a card he had
from a woman living in a fast quarter
of the city. I was shocked. Ho told
mo the woman was crazy about him and
had often kissed Mm.'
The name of Joan Sawyer was
brought into tho trial for the first time
this afternoon where Uterhart asked
MrB. DeSaulles if sho knew who "Jo"
was. She replied sho did and men
tioned the name. Heretofore Bhe ,has
been referred to merely as "Jo" or
"Miss Jo."
Mrs. DeSaulles said she once visited
her husband's bachelor quarters and
was asked to remain over night. She
declared she asked him to swear on
"Ms sacred word of honor that no
worrtnn had ever -stayed there with
(him" and was told none had.
"I learned later," she testified,
"that Joan Sawyer had stayed there.
It was horrible."
John Milholland, a brother of Inez
Molholland Boisscvain, told her, she
said, of her husband's affair with Joan
Sawyer and said every one in town
knew it.
