He has for some days been investigating the Portland shipyards, and labor con ditions as connected with them. D. A. White the veteran commission man is of the opinion that some one should suggest to Mr. Hoover that food conditions would vastly improve tf the federal Food administration would put a atop to the gambling in corn. While the food administration has' been in terested in the wheat proposition, it has entirely overlooked corn. The result is, Mr. White says, that the speculators have been busy with corn until now It is worth retail in Salem $3.50 a bush el. While the commission is urging peo ple to eat less wheat, the fact is that tl.e speculators in corn have forced the price so high that -corn products are more expensive than wheat. And as corn is forced by speculation to such a high price, almost all of the poultry in the cuntry is being fed on wheat and whoat products as they are cheaper. At present there isn 't any corn meal to be had in Portland, and oven then the price makes it pretty expensive for feed of any kind. In other words, Mr. White feols that the speculators in corn have forced the price so high that it is nocessary to use wheat and wheat products. Copyright 1117 Th. Noum of InpUM THANKSGIVING!
