Oct. 22. The flower of American young
manhood was brought together in a tem
porary camp today, training to become
officers of America's first contingent.
They are the hand-picked stars of
every training camp in America the
keenest, the cleanest, fightingest indiv
iduals it was possible to find back home
Their camp is established temporar
ily in ancient French training schools,
owing to present lack of American camp
facilities here. By the time the present
detachment is trained and the next con
tingent of training camp officer grad
uates arrive America will have her own

Are In Pitable Condition
of Poverty and Distress

Home, Oct. 22.Fifty thousand Serb
ians are starving and thousands are dy
ing from insufficient rations in the
Monastir district alone, according to the
report of the Bed Cross mission, which
was on its way to America today. The
mission has just returned from the Serb
ian front. They reported the destruc
tion of 35 villages in the Monastir sec
tion and fearful suffering among the
inhabitants. , , .
' It is understood the mission's formal
report will bo sensational in its revela
tion of the complaints of tho Serbian
government and people over political
confusion now existing as to Herbia.
The general morale of every citizen, it
was reported, has been seriously affect
ed by ignorance and suspicion as to
allied plans. The commission, it is un
derstood, will firmly urge a f ormel state
ment by the allies which will celarly
set forth their views on tho Jugoslav
problem.
Seattle Shipyards Busy
After Three Weeks' Strike
Seattle, Wash.. Oct. 22. The resound
ing song of the riveting gun was heard
again in Seattle shipyards today, af
ter a laps of three weeks.
The huge ship building industry,
with its many million dollars of con
tracts, resumed operations at top speed
as the result of the referendum voto
taken Saturday by more than 3,000 of
the striking members of the boilcrinak
crs union. The vote, which was taken
in union headquarters stood 1475 in fa
vor of returning to. work, with 123U op
posed to suclV action.
It was said several days will be re
quired to perfect the organization which
existed before the strike.
The men are at work again, pending
the adjustment of the industrial wage
adjustment committee.
The decision or the adjustment com
mittee, when it finally ia reached, will
be retroactive, and the new wages will
apply from August first.
Labor Troubles Near End.
San Francisco, Oct. 22. Prospects
are bright for an early permanent set
tlement of the differences which caus
ed the recent shipyard strikes on the
Pacific coast, Everett W. Macy, cliair
nian of the adjustment board, declared,
today when the board opened the San
Francisco bay strike situation.

V. O'Hara, of Portland addressed a
large assemblage at the armory this af
ternoon, being introduced with a few
remarks by Colonel John M. Poorman,
j liberty chairman for this district, and
who is bending every energy to meet
this district's allotment of tldfiOQ.
Father O'Hara consumed an hour and
was given close attention and much
applause at' the conclusion of his ad
dress.He did not go into tho war or
its causes and confined his remarks
strictly the subject in hand after a
splendid definition of America, Amevi
canifin and the Flng. His reference to
thoso (.atherea at American Lake and
the thousands who would go to Frame
if peace docs not come, was especially
impressive. His explanation of the lib
orty bonds, the sounu and excellent in
vestment, was clear and induced many

ing mood, particularly when he appeal
ed to those who had money in savings
funds at no higher interest than the
bonds, that are backed by the great
wealth of the whole nation. He declared
that what Is needed in this second call
is only skimming tho surface of our

our products. The speaker landed tho
patriotism of bankers who advise the
people to tako their money from savings
funds and buy bonds with it.
