Bethel Auxiliary Has Ice Cream Social Gets $14 for Red Cross Tho success of the Red Cross benefit ice cream social given bv the Bethel (Marion county) auxiliary, A. R. C. last Saturday night was largely due to the efforts of the vounz peonle of the 'auiiliary. An excellent program was given by the niembors ot Bethel aux iliary and others, consisting largely of music and song. Menioers or tnc k. . organizing committee from Salem gave talks. A group of oalem girls, one of the ukelele clubs," entertained the crowded school house with music and song, while Albert and Turfield Behind ler, pupils or Mrs. A. K. risn or oa lem, brought down tho house with their humorous reading. Several of the young ladies of the auxiliary gave two vocal numbers while Oswald Flicgel, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Robinson and Bert Bressler, with violin trombone, organ and guitar, re spectively, proved ono of the leading groups of entertainers. Several read ings and recitations were given by the local people. S. H. Barker and family have returned from a trip to Pacific City, Astoria and Hood Rivci taking in most of the seasido resort on the way. J. E. Phillips has been spending sev eral days at Tillamook and Portland. Miss Ethel Holloway, of Portland is a guest at the J. E. Phillips home. Paul Purvino of Salem, has been visit ing his. uncle, Lynn Purvine. Miss Leota Cattori is spending a few days in Salem visiting with her sister. Mrs. Frank ivolh. A baby boy was recently born to Mr. and Mrs. John Smith. Mr. Smith has been seriously ill, but at present is improving. Shannon Phillips, his mother and Miss Scott, of Portland, spent Sunday here with Mr. and Mrs. S. II. Barker. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Crawford re turned Saturday from a vacation spont at Pacific Citv, Tillamook and Nctarts. Mrs. Donncl Crawford is visiting with her parents, Mr, and Mrs. J. C. Zinger, at Hysson, Wash. more than $14. The attendance of the evening was estimated at 250, many coming from a distance. No less than ten automobiles were lined up near the school house during the social. Three cakes and several watermelons which were not sold by the slice, were auctioned off after the filling up pro cess was almost ovor, and all sold for fancy prices. Mrs. E. E. Matten, auxiliary chair man, had a groat deal to say concern ing the great assistance which the young people rendered. She said that the whole entertainment was engineer ed by them and the older people mere ly furnished the supplies. The active manager was Mrs. Kcmnli Scliulz. Mrs. Kate Coyle left Friday for sev eral weeks stay at Newport with her mother, Mrs. Harriet Patrick. The Red (Jross auxiliary of Spring Valley met with Mrs. D. G. Henry, Wed nesday afternoon,. and spent an indus trious afternoon, hemming slings. Mr. and Mrs. Dake will move from tho towuseud farm to a place near Al bany. We understand that the Town send farm has no other renter, as yet. .Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Scott and two children, Mary and Joseph, have return ed to Portland, where Mr. Scott will resume his school duties, after a pleas ant summer at the farm home. Mrs. J. T. Hunt, of West Salem, spent last week hero with Walter Hunt and family. Mr. aud Mrs. Ray Nash returned Monday from a trip to Harrisburg, where they visited with Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Cooley, former residents of Spring Valley. They report a most pleas ant visit, but tho return home was spoiled by the burning of their barn and all the contents on the day previous. We regret their loss which amounts .to about three thousand dollars, Mrs. Lucy French returned Thursday to her homo in Salem, after a weeke visit hero with her son, James, aud family. Miss Dot Poindexter and her sister, from Prinoville, visited Tuesday and "Wednesday of last week with their grandmother, Mrs. P. F. Clarke. The community was shocked and grieved to learn of tho sudden death of Mrs! Roy Marshall, at Salem, Wed nesday evening, from uric poisoning. While Mrs. Marshall was not in the best of health and was undor the doc tor's care, her death was entirely un expected. Tho family havo been living at Black Rock but she came to Sa'.eni for medical treatment. She leaves a husband, two small children, her par ents and' twelve brothers and 'sisters, of which she was the youngest. Before her marriage she was Miss Emma Woods, and was well known here, hav ing spent several years here, and grad uated from Zena school. She was twon tyfour years of ago. The funeral was held at the Zens school, Saturday, Sept., 1. Rev. G. A McKinlcy in charge. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of the. en tire community in their loss of a loving wife, mother and daughter. North Santiam News (Capital Journal Special Service) North Santiam, Sept. 5.
