Now we come to the packing and storing of the fruits and vegetables you have dried. Although not necessary, tin cans or glass jars make good receptacles for storing dried products. Pasteboard boxes witn tight covers stout paper bags, and patented parra fin paper cartons also afford amplo protection for dried fruits and things when protected from insects and ro dents, i Tho products must be protected from the outside moisture and will keep best in a cool, dry, well ventilated place. In humid regions air tight containers should be used. If yon pack just enough for a meal in each containor, it will not be neces sary to open a container the contents of which cannot be consumed in, a short time. If a paper bag is used the upper part should be twisted into a neck, bent over and tied tightly with twine. You might also paint it with a brnsn dipped in melted parrafih. You might take an added precaution by putting the bags in a tin container witn a iigin niiuijs cover, such its a lard can or pail. La bel all bags to show what they contain. If fruits or vegetables are packed in tight containers immediately upon be ing thoroughly dried they will remain just as brittle as: when taken from tho drier- Jf not dried thoroughly they will soon mold. To prevent this tho mater ial should be examined within 24 hours after packing and if it appears moist it must be dried further. ADVERTISED LETTERS. August 7, 3917. Robert J. Paulus, manager of the Salem Fruit Union says that sales have been slow for the past three weeks. However, he thought that in view of the fact that everything else is high compared to last year that even the present price of prunes was not out of proportion compared to other food products. Oregon's Crop An Average. The yield of prunes for this part of the valley would about equal that of last year, Mr. Paulus said. On an esti mate of 835 acres the crop prospects showed a shrinkage of 90,000 pounds compared to one year ago, or about 100 pounds to the acre. These estimates included several of the shorter drops. As the better orchards will later be included in the estimate, he thought the crop would average up- well in this vicinity with that of Jaat year. But jjst at present, things seems to be at a stand still as the growers are demanding a certain figure and the eastern buyers are holding back. It is probably the same old proposition of the grower banking his knowledge of tile situation against that of the east ern buyer. But this year, so' many new elements enter into the situation that even the experts, with the figures 10 back them, hardly know which way to guess. Hence, just at present, there is nothing much stirring in the prjnl market. Stafford, Miss Marguerite; Thompson,) Mr. Gordon; Tracey, Mrs. H. N.; Wal lace, Mr. Ernest. MAY GRANT PASSES.
