Air Exploits Amazing By William Philip Simnis (United Press staff correspondent) With the British Armies in the Field Aug. 2. The Infantry paused today in sticky mud, but even in rain swept skies British airmen kept up their un ceasing offensive. One of tho most amazing exploits of the war has been the rlritish aerial of fensive. It started on the day opening the Flanders drive a day as bad us could be for flying. Five hundred feet above the ground the mists hung, with a rain that came later in the afternoon. But the British flyers flew regawlless of bails of shells and storms of ma chine gun fire. In thatirst day Brit ish airmen flew 8B04 hours in all and fired 1 1,2.18 rounds of ammunition. The soup like weather continued to day. Troops resemble mud turtles more than fighters and human beings. The military situation is practically un changed. The Germans made a partially suc cessful counter attack at 5 o'clock yes terday afternoon north of Frozcnberg, under cover of a heavy smoke barrage. and. terrific artillcrying. Tho British rallied and counter attacked at o'clock Inst night on a front of 300 yards. They re took the place. I'.nemy artillery was very netive dur ing the night east of Ypres, but the infantry was quiescent. The British threw many heavy sholls into St. Ju lien. 1 Consolidation of positions on the high ground was accomplished during the night by the French, but no addi tional details are available. ; Eastman Is Puzzled Wants Information As to Mortgage Law E. V. Eastman of La Grande, is puz zled ovor the construction of a sentence in chapter 32 page 40, of tho 1917 ses sion laws, roluting to the maturity of mortgages and has written Secretary Olcott concerning it. The law reads as though mortgages are presumed to be paid after ten years after maturity and then says: "This act shall not take effect until the 1st day of January A. D, 1914." . It is this statement that puzzles him because the act was not passed until January 31, 1917. He savs there must bo some mistake ,and if it is not a mis take askg whether or not if it does not affect mortgages that maturo prior to January 1914. Secretary Olcott replied that he look ed up the case as it went through the legislative mill and he says he finds that the date remains the same through out.
