said:
The trading community found little
incentive for following up the improve
ment in security quotations which was
in progress at the close of the week.
The character of today's market was
unchanged from that which has obtain
ed for the past fortnight- Opening
prices were generally higher, but before
trading had progressed far it became
evident that, irrespective of many bull
ish utterances, buyers for the advance
were scarce.
The bear side of the market appealed
most to the professionals. By early af
ternoon declines of from one to two
points were reflected by many of the
standard issues, including steel common,

ON SHIPPING BOARD
Captain White the Odd Man,
Quits This May Settle
the Dispute
Washington, July 3. Captain J. B.
White, Kansas City, member of the
United States shipping board, has ten
dered his resignation to President Wil
son. It will be accepted.
White constituted the odd man on
the board of directors which gave Den
man the balance of power in meetings
covering the respective Goethals and
Penman shipbyilding proposals.
In appointing White's successor,
Presidont Wilson will have the oppor
tunity of bringing to a head action on
the building program. White has been
lined up with Dennian and Theodore
Brent with the board majority, while
JoJhn A. Donald and R. B. Stevens
have espoused Goethals' cause.
Reports that Donald had also re
signed were denied by him today.
A score of shipbuilders, waiting for
the Denman-Goothals row to clear so
they can go to work, are here today to

Simultaneously, it developed that
since Goethals wrote the president of

der the provisions of the state public
utility law, Attorney General Tanner
today filed suit in the superior court
here to compel the Taconia Railway &
Power company to give "adequate
street car service" in Tacoma. Only
a partial service has been maintained
by the company since the inauguration
of a strike by its niotoinieu mid con
ductors a week, ago. City Attorney
Harmon petitioned tho public service

cerned, ascertain the facts of the sit
uation and hen give a decision. The
stnte law specifies that the traction
company is obligated to the public to
provido safe, sufficient and adequate

May Rdopt Agreement.
Butte, Mont., July 23. Despite the
rejection Saturday night by the Ma
chinists' and Boilermakers' Unions of
the proposed contract offered by the
Anaconda Copper Mining company, it is
predicted here today that the rejected
agreement would be adopted. Interna
tional union officials say that metal
trade locals in other Montana cities,
each with one vote, would mispport the
agreement and insure its adoption at a
meeting of all union councils in the
state. Tho company announced. that, ho
further concessions would be marc to
the unionists.
