The associaation was to pay the state1 $125 a month for use of the land, which is needed for the Oregon state hospital and which has been con demned. As no contract has been en tered into for the construction of a new building, and the alternative was that if no contract was made, an -action for ejectment was to be begun by by the state, it Is expected that such an action may be begun shortly. Two months have passed by since the contract was to have been signed and :io contract has been made. Secre tary Goodin was informed recently that that the associataion would probably pay the rent. Shortly after the " legislature ad journed, in compliance with a resolu tion passed by the joint ways and means committee that the associataion be given -00 days in which to vacate, Secretary Oleott presented such a reso lution to the board but Governor Withycombe and Treasurer Kay re fused to support it. Now Kay has been aroused by the refusal to par rent and is in favor of ousted proceed ings. - . . Only 25 a Week Can Enlist In the Navy That the navy is apparently filling up with desirable men is seen in a telegram received Saturday by J- E. Adams, machinist, in charge of the navy recruiting station here, which says that this district, which com prises Portland, Spokane, Salem, Pen dleton, Eugene and Roseburg, is al lowed to enlist only 25 men each week, and that only the ibest are to be taken. This order is effective today and af fects first enlistments and does not apply to men who are entitled to re enlist. The order does not apply to machinists and landsmen for quarter masters and machinists for aviaation. All first enlistments in shipwright,, shirjfitter, blacksmith, -boilej-nia.ker ,j and painter are discontinued. It is getting harder to enlist in the navy with this order in effect.
