Monmouth News (Capital Journal Special Service) Monmouth, July 10.-The Fourth of July was celebrated, iH -Monmouth in a sane and quiet manner as most be fitting the times and conditions exist ing thruout the world. The program given'in the beautiful fir grove on the normal Campus by students and facul ty was patriotic, and unique in that it was strictly up to date, Pres. Acker man presided as the following program was rendered: Processional of allied na tions in historical pageant; song, Am erica, audience; declaration of. Inde pendence, Rosa 11. Pnrrott; pageant of allied nations, arranged and directed by. Laura J. Taylor; patriotic, address, M. S. l'ittman; song, Star Spangled Banner, audience; band concert on campus at 7:30. The pageant of the allied nations which was the principal feature on the program, was originated, composed aud directed by Miss Laura Taylor, present head of the physical training department 'of the O. N. S. It is one of the best things ever givi iu Monmouth and Miss Taylor deserves much credit for the splendid effort. The series of pageants representing the part each of the allied nations took in the march of progress were given by groups ot students divided bv counties. The spirit of progress, so well taken by Miss McCord, is the prevailing influ ence thruout the whole series: that prompts the nations down thru the epochs to fall in lino for world democ racy. The many dances, drills and his torical events, tho singing of national songs, the bright Aid beautiful cos tumes all served to add charm to the occasion. The pagenft representing Am erica was perhaps the "favorite ith the crowd; also the presentation of the Statue of Liberty, frof. Ostein was a most conspicuous figure in the bright Japanese costume of n runner hauling a jinrickisha in which a dainty little Japanese lady sat. The declaration of independence, old but ever new and in teresting, was read by Miss Rosa B. i'arrott, head of the department of Eng lish. Prof. l'ittman gave a most inter esting and inspiring twenty minute talk nt the close of tho exercises, tak ing for his subject "America the liber ator." Mr. Pittman thinks that Ger many is at war because she thinks war is right but that America had gone into it reluctantly only when forced to save the world from autocracy. He hopes to sec the dawn of the new era which he believes will follow the close of this terrible conflict when now-light shall dawn and the world will see that to make democracy sate and sure for all ma ii kind many other things besides war are essential. Education must be made free and universal so that all may be enlightened and thus made capable of self government. The greatest of all dec larations of independence is yet to be signed that of freedom from ignor ance. Most of the money now spent for war purposes would better be spent for education; as universal education is most important wars come trom ig norance and misunderstanding. Also to make democracy safe for the world the exploits ot capital must be controlled nud financial tyranny abolished. The wealth must be more equally distribut ed so that everv one may own some thing for the man without a home is Cocoanuta Cantaloupes Watermelons $1 $1.7.")((i2.2j 7.. 3c COBVALLIS CONNECTION MOSTH SuUMD Lv Consuls 8:25 a m 10 .... 12:12 p m 14 .... 2:41 p m 16 .... 4:10 p m ....... 20 .... 1:18 p B 22 ....
