Dallas Had Costly
Blaze Saturday Night

Dallas, ,luly 5. Fire of a mysterious
origin which started in the Ladies Tog
gery owned by Mrs. Chas. Gregory,
late last Suturday night damaged the
contents of the store to the amount of
about $10,000. The blaze was discov
ered before it had gained much head
way and this fact alone saved nearby
property, The stock of the Dallas Gro
cery company located next door was
damaged somewhat by smoke and wa
ter but was able to open up for husi
ncss Monday morning. Insurance udjust
crs are expected In Dallas today to ad
just the losses on the stock of Mrs.
Gregory's and the buildings.
Attendance at Examinations Large
A large attendance of applicants for
teachers papers is reported by County
School Superintendent Fred Crowley at'
the examinations held in Dallas and
Monmouth last Friday. According to
reports just tabulated by the school su
perintendent 171 applicants took the
tests in the two cities last week. Owing
to a large attendance of prospective
teachers attending the summer normal
examinations were held in that city this
year, heretofore- all examinations hnve
been given in Dallas. The tests were con
ducted by Mr. Crowley, W. 1. Ford,
Mrs, F. H. Morrison and Mrs. Frerl S.
Crowley. The results of the tests Will
be given out about the first of August.
Dallas Woman's Mother Passes
Mrs. Julia Silver, mother of Mrs.
Winnie Biaden, secretary Of the Dallas
Commercial club, died Monday night :il
her home in Portland after an illness
of several months. Mrs. Braden left
immediately for Portland upon the re
ceipt of the news of her mothers death.

Mrs. V. S. Loughary has returned
from a short visit at the homo of her
sister, Mrs. E. L. Dadley in Portland.
J. N. Hart, a prominent attorney of
Portland was in Dallas for a short time
Tuesday afternoon visiting relatives
and friends. Mr. Hart was formerly
school superintendent of Polk county
and also represented this district in the
legislature.
Hen Nichols, an old time resident of
Dallas and one of the first sheriffs of
I'olk county, is in the city visiting rel
atives and friends. Mr. ..ichols is ubout
93 years of age and is very active for
a man of his vears.
PLANT AT TURNER
IS GROWING STEADILY
Turner, Or., duly B. Turner has a
good flax mill doing full service as a
plant. Flax is being shipped here from
all parts of the state, and us the ship
ments increase the plant will expand to
meet the trade. Three carloads of flax
were received here last week from Gas
ton. The flax straw, about -V tons to
the acre, averages about two feet in
length and the fiber was of good qual
ity.
