Market Was Listless
and Prices Saving
New York, April 20. The New York
Evening Sun financial review today
said:
Interest in Wall Street today was
centered mainly in the action of the
interstate commerce commission with
respect to the freight rate increase.
There was a good deal of confusion as
to the full meaning of the tentative
order permitting the railroads to file
supplemental tariffs advancing rates
15 per cent effective June 1- It is gen
trally assumed that unless the shipping
interests can show good reasons why
the tariffs should not be increased to
that extent, they will go into fuH ef
fect on that date. ,
The general market turned weak and

Attempted to Blow Up
Capital Building at
Columbus Ohio
Columbus, Ohio, April 20. That an
attempt was made to blow up the cap
itol building here yesterday morning
leaked out today.
Major P. J. Berry, in ehargo of the
Third regiment troops here, early yes
terday received a report from W. H.
McCann, a Columbus teamster, that
while passing the state house at 5:45
a', m- yesterday,""he saw a suspicious
man kneeling before a cellar window
beneath the treasury department.
McCann said he walked toward the
man, who had a sTouch hat pulled down
over his eyes. The man jumped up, Mc
Cann said, and grabbed a small box
and ran out of the state house yard.
Berry inspected the place and found
a home made contrivance for setting
off high explosives, which he now has
in his possession.
State House Engineer McGuire re
ported to Berry that he had seen two
suspicious looking men lurking , late
Wednesday in the vicinity of which
the apparatus was found.
Berry at once placed a guard on the
state house.
remained sj) until near the close, when
there was some improvement.
Bear attacks were numerous in va
rious quarters. In the steel group Beth
lehem issues were off four to five
points and Sloss-Sheffield yielded sev
en points. United States Steel moved
below 111. The copper and shipping
shares ruled fractionally down: There
was distinct weakness in the sugar, to
bacco, motor and rubber stocks. Alco
hol issues reacted on "dry" law agi
tation. Munitions and specialties were
neglected and soft. The. railroads lost
something more 'than their early gain.

Prepares Foundation
Plans for the Bridge
Now that the contest between the
Polk county and Marion county courts
is ended regarding the type of bridge
to be built, things will move' slowly for
a while. Although new men are yow on
the state highway commission and new
bridge engineers, it is more than prob
able that the plan9 and specifications
drawn by the former highway commis
sion's engineers will be used. The
foundation plans will probably be com
pleted in detail, ready to submit to con
tractors, in about two weeks. The com
mission has considerable work on hand
and it will be perhaps two months be
fore it can give its time to the draw
ing of the details of the superstructure
of the bridge, whereby they may be sub
mitted to contractors. The materials in
the old bridge built 26 years ago are too
light and rust worn to be used in any
way and will have to be sold as scrap
iron. As soon ns the ennntv i.nnim;..;n.
ers of both counties meet, the agreement
niu ue signea nereoy l'olK county is to
pay $41,270 on the new bridge.
