Reach Agreement
Now York, April 17.-r-Coul miners and
operators of the bituminous field who,
in separato conferences today, reached
an agreement for a i!0 per cent wage in
crease; went into joint conference short
ly after 3 o'clock this afternoon to
ratify the agreement and. place them
selves on record supporting the war- It
was understood the joint conference
would vote to- speed up coal production
and appoint a permanent committee of
five -miners and five operators to co
operate with the government in every
way possible.

The Foresters of America are arrang
ing for a special evening of entertain
ment when their new headquarters will
be dedicated. This will probably be on
the evening of Tuesday, May 1. The
wives of the members will be asked to
assist in the program.
The next meeting of the Polk-Yamhill-Marion
Medical societv will be held
Friday evening of this week at the old
medical college, Salem. Dr. H. J. Clem
ents will read a paper on "The Care and
Treatment of Infectious Venereal Dis
eases, " with special relation to the in
terests of public health. An effort will
be made to secure a military officer to
deliver an address. The application of
Dr. H. C. Hickman will be voted on for
membership.
In some cities there has been a dispo
sition among retailers to limit the pur
chases of sugar and flour lest there
should be so much buying that the retail
price would advance several notches
higher. Inquiry among the grocers in
Salem indicate that all that is necessary
to purchase a good supply of sugar or
flour is to have the cash or a good
credit rating. No limit has been placed
on any household necessity in the way
of food.
The biff ball and volley ball teams of
the Y. M. C. A. ior the coming month
met in goodly number last evening for
the first contest. After the fray was
over the score stood with the Farrar
team winning in volley ball 15 to 13,
and in biff ball 13 to 2. Two points
were won by the Farrar team on the
strength of these victories and a quar
ter of a point on attendance.

B. W. Macy, president of the Salem
Eifle club, bn called a special meeting
for Wednesday evening at the old arm
ory to disruss several plans for the sum
mer. Arrangements will be made for
outdoor shooting. Also for pistol and re
volver practice, as many members oY the
Bifle club are also associated with the
officers reserve corps and other military
organisations.

The third of the series of the chess
tournament at the Commercial club will
be held Friday evening of this week.
Eighteen player lined up last Friday
evening and at the next game it is fig
ured that at least every chess player in
the city will be there either to take
part in the tournament or to just watch
the players do the deep thinking.
The BUverton, Dallas, Independence
and Aurora Knights of Pythias will
come to Salem this evening to attend a
session of the local lodge. The occasion
is the addresses by Grand Chancellor
Wortman, of Portland, and Grand Keep
er of the Records and Seals Gleason, of
Portland. Besides the addresses, there
will be several musical numbers,

The Salem postoffice has been of
ficially advised that no sealed packages
will be mailed to Italy, as that govern
ment has notified this country such
packages would be confiscated. Letters
mny be sent of course, but they will be
carefully read by the censor. The Re
public of Panama, through which our
10 mile strip runs, will accept sealed
packages.
Those who wish to become teachers
in Sunday school will have the chance
to properly train themselves before be
ginning the work. AH beginners and
primary teachers in Marion county are
invited to attend a meeting Saturday
afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Y. W.
C. A. to meet Miss Nellie Casebere who
will give the first of the scries of'eight
lesson sin primary teaching. The course
is given under the direction of the Ma
rion County Sunday School association
with the locil officers, Miss Cora Tnlk
ington, president, and Miss Marguerite
Fisher, secretary. Miss Casebere has
had training in the teaching of children
and her ability as a kindergarten teach
er is well known.

Business continues good at the navy
recruiting headquarters in the postof
fice building. The following were ac
cepted today: Leslie Fee, 17, of Eddys
ville; Samuel K. Plummer, IS), of Salem;
Louis J. Frost, 16, Salem j Harry Rhodes,
18, Salem. All four of the young men
enlisted as apprentice seamen. While
in training they will receive $17-60 a
month and tor their first assignment
in active duty, $20.90 a month and all
found. Those who qualify for the gun
ners crews or signal corps receive extra
compensation. Young recruits are given
considerable latitude in selecting their
service after the training period.

Schrunk, in his 80th year.
He is- survived by two sons, Frank
Schmnk, living near Independence, and
A. W. Schrunk, of Aumsville, and two
daughters, Mrs. Reynolds, living neni
Independence, and Mrs. Chas. Griffin,
of Mapleton, Iowa.
The funeral services will be held
Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock
from the First Methodist church and
will be conducted by the Rev. R. N.
Avison. Bnrial will be in the City View
cemetery.
