Two recruits yesterday afternoon and two recruits this morning are the re sults of the special campaign to raise Company M to the required 150 men Sergeant Ulunk, rVrgeant Grallop, and Musician Ziun are in Salem today to as sist in the recruiting, and it is expect ed their efforts will be successful. Sa lem's quota is 40 men, and every effort is being made to raise it as soon as possible. This morning the members of the Girls' National Honor Guard were out distributing bills calling for en listments, and before noon they were seen everywhere. The city budget for the year 1917 in cluded $2,000 for the free band concerts in Willson park. Last year 25 concerts were -given, but several things have happened to reduce the number this coming summer. Tho free Jerry had to be taken care of to the cxteut of $250 With the $1,750 left, the park commit tee has apportioned it out as follows: The Salem bond will be given $1,62(5 for 18 concerts; $70 will be paid for one eoncort by the Portland Police band; $35 will be paid for two concerts by Hebel'a Cherry Bud band. The park committee will select the vocalists end will pay the singers from funds left in their hands. The naval recruiting office la the postoffice building is getting its hare of the young men who arc enlisting now in order to be given the privilege of selecting the branch of service. Ap plications were received today from John H. Domugalla, age 18 years, for service as apprentice seaman. Harold H. Smith made application for the en gineering department and Eoy I". Ander son, 10, as apprentice seaman, tvery year 100 young men under the age of IS years will be taken from the ranks and appointed to AnLapolis the assignments being msde from competitive examiua tioa. After four years at Annepolis, on graduation the midshipman is given a roniwisnion in the navy ss ensign, the firi-t rank of a naval officer- This rank corresponds to that of eecond lieutenant in the regular army and the pay Is $1, 704 a year, with certain additional al lowances.
