Police Commissioner Likes Ford Machnes When Tolice Commissioner Woods recently appeared before the Borough Presidents of New York City to ask for an increase in the local instruments of law and order, he answered a moot ed question and established a new 'table of measures" for the peda gogues. . The usual routine of the board meet ing had progressed perfunct inly. The formula "II. C. of L." had been in voked to bring about increased stipends for various departmental servants, and the 235 add tional patrolmen asked for had been granted. But nothing sen sational occurred until the commis sioner appealed for, fifty more police" sergeants. In answer to this request President Mathcwson informed the commissioner that he cotild have either flie 50 sergeants or 17 additional Ford cars which the department also so licited, and asked the commissioner which he would prefer. '-'I need the Fords more," was the response. ''If it is a matter of choicef I'd j refer Fords to sergeants." So the new standard was set up, unc I'orct car equals three police ser geants." And what an interesting table of measures can be evolved from this basis: "One Ford equals three sergeants. One sergeant equals 0 patrolmen. One patrolman controls 750 ordinary citizens." Thus, one Ford is responsible for the rectitude of 45, 000 humans. There's a tremendous force for righteousness in those more than 1,750,000 active moving "Univer sal cars." WATCHAMA COLUMN (By "GM") Chins The chin is a one story addition built on the lower end of man's physi ognomy to keep his face from ending too abruptly. But some perverse faces end that way anyhow. In fact, chins, like wealth are unevenly distributed. Some of us have too many and some none at alt. The Lord intended ns to have one apiece, but whoever is in charge of the chin distribution department has muff ed his job. This is unfortunate, as the liin is an almost indispensable adjunct to ev ery face. It is necessary for whiskers ami luings. mo man who wears an assortment of them ought to be asham ed of himself.
