This bill provides for the re porting at stated times to the dairy and food commission of the quantities of goods held in cold storage, and the proper marking, labeling and selling of the same as cold storage goods. The bill is to eliminate competition be tween that which has been in cold stor age and fresh goods. It is favored by the state grange, farmers' union, Fed eration of Labor, Woman's Federated clubs and the dairy men of the state. So far, the only opposition to the bill has come from the cold storage interests in Portland. The hearing .will be pub lic. o Grant Corby has been appointed to assist City Attorney Macy in conduct ing what is known as the Twelfth street cases soon to bo tried before the su preme court. The question involved is the legality of the procedure for the paving of Twelfth street from Mission to the city limits, 11 blocks. Property owners brought suit to enjoin the city from collecting the paving assessments The city lost its case in the circuit court two years ago and if it loses in the trial before the supreme court, it will be held liable for the $30,000 involved. I here is no genoral question of law in volved and the decision will not effect other paving assessments in the city. It is claimed by the property owners that the legal procedure of the city was wrong. Dallas Bridge Meeting Was Not Unanimous Another account of the meeting held at Dallas yesterday when the commit tee appointed from West Salem con ferred with the Polk county court, is to the effect that about 50 wore present at the meeting and that three-fourths or this number were from the country adjacent to West Salem. The West Sa lem people favored a low level steel bridge. The same account indicated that very few were present from In dependence and Monmouth and that Falls City was represented by one law yer who lives in Dallas. When the West Salem delegates expressed themselves in favor of a low level steel bridge. John Kirkpatrick iutimatd rjrettv strongly that they were apeparing in the wrong court and should be in Ma rion county. The judge also expressed a few uncomplimentary thoughts regard ing the Salem papers. It seems that the stand taken by Polk county for a concrete bridge comes from the meeting held last fall when all the road supervisors and two delegates from each road district met in Dallas to con fer with the county court as to the needs of the county and the budget for 1917. At this meeting the court and road suiiervisors were addressed by Judge Kirkpatrick, Walter Tooze, Jr., and I. L. Patterson, all favoring a con crete bridge. After the speakers had delivered addresses, the meeting pass ed resolutions favoring concrete. missing, rue survivors were due at Queenstown at 8 p. m. The message said: "California apparently torpedoed a bout ten a. m . " The state department was advised that the California mounted one three inch gun, but held ''the question of armament orders does not mitigate Ger many's offense." Spain, the department said, may make inquiries how Americans fared on the California, though the depart ment itself has said it will not ask any questions of Germany in the present situation. Women and Chiluren Lost New York, Feb. 8. Six women and five children are among the missing passengers of the Anchor liner Califor nia sunk, yesterday, according to a cable from Glasgow received at the local offices of the line today. "Steamer torpedoed without warn ing," said the cablegram. "Missing: second class, Mrs. M. Smith, Edna Smith, Mrs. Kidd, Mr. Alderson (wife saved) Master Alderson, Mrs. McCon nell and two children, Niel Gillies, Miss H. Roberts; third class. Mrs. M. Little and child (three children saved), Miss A.Forbes."' The iiMHseno-er list issued TircviouslY by the company lists Mrs. A. Smith and! by later witnesses Mrs. . Kirtd from twgary, AiDerta; j. W. Alderson, Vancouver, B. '.; Mrs. Mary C. O'Connell Philadelphia; Niel Gillies, Glasgow. Mrs. Margaret Little was registered from 423 East 25th street, New York, and Miss Annie Forbes from Toronto. The state department, message from Consul Frost said both the California and Eavestone were sunk without warn ing. The Eavestone, being a British collier, was, nowever, suDjeci to uu warned attack. This did not apply to the California. .TamcB Riley, of the Anchor line, said today that there is some question re garding the American citizenship of John Lee, seaman aboard the Califor nia, who was said to be an American. When Lee applied for passports, there was some question about proof of his citizenship, Riley said, and he was un able definitely to pitove citizenship. He found two Americans who signed affidavits that they ..new him and was signed with the crew. peal for the life of a man ever heard in California. Every seat in the room was occupied and scores of persons blocked the aisles and fought for points of vantage at the entrance to the chamber. "There is something more than Thomas J. Mooney on trial here," he said. There is the law itself. "I am justified in concluding that the issne iu this case is of greater im portance than anything since the as sassination of Abraham Lincoln." Cockran recited in considerable de tail the circumstances surrounding Mooney 's arrest, alleging "lawless ness" ty the district attorney in his treatment of the prisoner. He de manded certainty on the part of all jurors -is to the guilt of the accused before they can find a verdict con victing Mooney. He -advanced the theory that the bomb which killed ten ersons and in jured fifty last July might have, been exploded by some frenzied Mexican as a protest against the American inves ion of Mexico, which was momentarily expected at that time. He attacked bitterly the testimony of tho state's star witness, F. C. Or man, declaring it was uncorroborated The lawyer pleaded with the ,iury noli to ' surrender Moonev up, not to take the dread step of delivering him, not merely to the death of a felon, but to a memory so infinite that, future generations to the end or tne world will remember his name for tho pur pose of execrating it."
