LIVING WITHIN AN ALLOWANCE There is considerable discussion as to the effect of the tax limitation law amendment to the constitution, and considerable uneasiness as to the finances needed to car ry on the affairs of the state. It is indeed a new depar One remedy suggested for the high cost of living is for consumers to carry home their own supplies from the grocei-y instead of having them delivered. We fear the gentleman who made the suggestion did not delve deep into the matter. In order to carry things from the grocer one must first go from home to the grocery. Now thisj raises the question of distance, and how lone it would i take to make the trip and the cost. If the purchaser had to take a street car in order to reach the store, there would be ten cents outlay that would as well be spent in having the goods delivered. True one could walk, but beyond a certain distance, if one's time is worth any thing, it is a saving to use the cars. Besides if the dis tance is such that it can be walked without too much loss of time the wear of shoe leather at present prices is practically a standoff for carefare. It resolves itself into the question : Can several hundred people go down town after their groceries and carry them home more cheaply than the store can deliver them? Besides the fellow that carries home his stuff finds that the price of butter and eggs is the same anyway or practically so. When the 1 A 111 i . ... n . . . fTifti,1i.m m'l L'li iHf) ni'ifii fAH ffAAia r o !n7rirH nmft nviAthAH ture Heretofore the question or means tor supporting f""-" u"v r , , i.u auuwci the many affairs of the state was a matter that depended ; tor those carried home by the purchaser there will be an entirely on the feeling of the legislators and the influ- i opportunity for the plan to be tried out. (WHATEVER-HIS-OTHER-NAME-IS) MC DANIEL, THE MANAGER OF THE SALEM COM MERCIAL CLUB. He is a nice young man and I like him very much and I am very glad that when I called to see him, he shook my hand and smiled real heartily and told me he was glad to meet me and how did I like Salem and told me to stick around, and all that kind of thing, and I did. I WANT TO THANK HIM. For not telling me that the rain was unusually wet for this time of the year and for not asking me if I was in terested in investments, or buying farm land, the first time he ever met me, a complete stranger to him. I THINK MR. McDANIEL Set a very good example and I hope everybody I meet will treat me just like Mr. McDaniel did, and if they do I will like them as much as I do him and am thanking them in advance for kind treatment. Some of the big boys may have to wear round-a-bouts and some of the others may have difficulty in making the bottoms of their overalls meet their shoe tops, but it will have to be managed some way by the legislature. The situation so far as the state is concerned, is a new one, but the same thing is commended by experts in the matter of domestic economy. They recommend the head of the family giving the wife an allowance for household expenses, and passing the matter of making it go round up to the little woman who manages the family affairs. If she can get away with the problem alone it would seem that the legislature with 88 men and one woman in each house to help them, should be able to make the state ex penses' stay within the prescribed limit. If they can't, they can do as the head of the family is recommended to do, 'turn the job over to "The Lady of the House." A JUST AND WISE RULING the republicans is not due so much to politics as to senti ment. The returns indicate that a large portion of the women voters, regardless of politics, voted for Miss Rankin and while electing President Wilson at the same time by their votes may have made one branch of con gress inimical to him. However the fact that the house is close is a good feature regardless of politics for it means that measures cannot well be forced through by a party vote regardless of merit. Now comes Dr. McPherson, who was the principal promoter of the amendment to the state constitution per mitting it to bond itself for $18,000,000 for carrying out a rural credit system, admits that the bill is weak, ana expresses the hope that it can be amended. We suggest that if there is anything in the way of the amendment working all right, that its friends seek the advice of Commissioner Daly of Portland and the attorneys for the jitney drivers. If they can't find a hole in the amend ment they can drive a jitney through, then it will be time to arrange for submitting an amendment to the amend- The Oreiron Voter discussing the ruling of the inter- menc inai w ame tne situation. nni-,iMn,. nnmntiaiiinii vonnirmo' rati t'nndst I'll O'l'.'lTlti the same rates from eastern points to the coast by way . Kor mare than thirty years Russell has boon predicting that all existing governments were doomed to fall, and that the year 1914 would murk the be ginning of the end. Take particular notice of that date. It is a positive fact that in a book which he wrote, printed and copyrighted over thirty years ago, Russell mentions over end over the date, 1914, as the time whes something big would begin to happen. Well, ,we do know that something started right kerdab on the date that Russel) said something would start and none of us are smart enough yet to prove thut it won't wind up just as he says it will. It don't require any stretch of imagination to see how the nations of the east, by going on in their present mad course, can totally destroy each other. And if this coun try follows Wilson and Roosevelt and their gang of war .jingoes, we will be drawn into it and go just like the rest. And so if l'astor Russell don't turn out to be a true prophet, it certainly won't be the fault of the military lead ers of the world and their following of war jingoes who are all out whooping it up tor the great International iSui cide'club of the World. These are the cardinal points of safe investment: FIRST: Security of principal. It is utterly futile to invest money without having this point passed upon competently. SECOND: Availability of funds, in case of need. Too many find, too late, that they are in possession of "securities" which have no market and which no bank will accept as collateral. THIRD : Certainty of interest return. Thousands of investors are misled by vain promises. FOURTH: Interest rate a point often placed first, but really be longs last. As interest rate rises, security, prompt interest return and availability usually recede often to the vanishing point.
