The amount already raised this year out of the packets of Salem folk for charity has been tremendous, , The day, however, when people would crowd to a benefit simply because of the prestige of names connected with the undertaking is past. To fill ball ioobi or theatre you must have the At traction to bring the smart crowd and the talents to hold it Hfter it arrives. The next large and important chari ty affair scheduled in the calendar, is the, Cberrian benefit play "The Dic tator," to be Riven at the Grand the atre on the evenings of December the 14th and 19th. Already this philanthropy is creating a great deal of interest and enthusl nm and promises to be a huge suc cess. The play is under the direction ot .lames Mott. whose successful amateur productions have been not only "bene fits" but rare treats. The residence was decked with huge white chrysanthemums, pink carnations and greeus all artistically arranged in the various rooms. Sutherland lclt today for Portland, where they will pass the week end. Governor and Mrs. James Withy combe and daughter, Miss Mabel Withvcombe, will move next week from their'apaitments at the J. A. Mills res idence and will occupy the attractive A. N". Moores residence on Chemeketa street. It is said the Moores have leas ed their place to the Withyeombe's for a year or so, during which time they will be ensconced in apartments. . Mrs. Harry Hawkins (Laura Taylor) the popular "Albany girl, whose recent marriago has given Salem society an other charming young matron, was the honor guest at an artistically appoint ed luncheon lor which Mrs. Clyde 0. Graham was hostess Monday. The alfair was most informal, only a few of the younger matrons being asked to meet the liftle bride. Yellow chrysanthemums decked the pretty ta ble' around which covers were placed for the honor guest, Mrs. George Wil liam Grav, Mrs. Curtis H. The house was appropriately decorat ed for the occasion with crimson hearts eu4ids, ivy, Oregon grape and brilliant red carnations. In the hall a huge red umbrella was hung in one corner to receive the gifts. In the living room an arch of ivy, and Oregon grape was centered with a large red bell for the mock wedding, which was a feature of the evening. Miss Gertrude Cory was the bride and Miss Burdin Myers acted as Broom. jwhile Mrs. C. C. Simeral performed the wedding ceremony. Small fables prettily adorned with red carnations and dainty place cards were arranged for the refreshments.
