Grew Big Onions and
Yield Was Heavy
Six onions weighing altogether SO
ounces were "shown today by- R. G.
Green living on the Ironton friiit tract
six miles southwest ot Salem. They
were of the yellow, necklnco and Red
necklace variety and compare fnvtor
ably in flavor with tho famous Ber
mudas. Mr. Oreen was not only proud
of the large size and flavor of the
onions, but has become convinced that
the soil in the Ironton tract is especi
ally ndhpted for onions, although he
bad bpcu told they would not grow. in
this part of Oregon. On n tract 30 by
40 feet, he raised 14 sacks of 85 pounds
each, a total of 1190 pounds, or at the
rate of 572 sacks or 43520 pounds to
tho acre. And while they wero grow
ing, -the family had ail the young
onions their table required. Xrtxt year
Mr. Green is going into the raising of
onions right as ho 'believes there's
monpv in it.

Move to Reorganize
Progressive Party
New York, Dec. 1. Reorganization
of the progressive party, with certain
present well known members, includ
ing George W. Perkins left out, is the
purpose of an active group of party

meeting in St. Louis in January.
John Robert Taylor, progressive stato
committeeman from. Brooklyn, who is
one of the sponsors of the rejuvena
tion scheme, is quoted as declaring he
has thousands of signgd pledges from
progressives who want the reorganiza
tion. To attend the eleventh annual state
Older Boys' conference for western
Oregon, 35 young men' from the differ
ent churches of the city left this morn
ing for C'orvallis. The sessions began
this afternoon and will close Sunday
evening. Will S. Hale, superintendent

Harvey Ridings,' 13-year-old son of
Mrs. Nettie Ridings, who is now held
in the county jail on a charge of burg
lary of the'o. K.- grocery, aud whose
futher is in the Oregon state penitenti

of Mrs. McDaniel on Winter street, in
whose charge he had been placed by
Judge Bushey pending a hearing this
morning, and in making his way across
the Polk-Marion bridge this morning
shoved a revolver, against the ribs of
Frank Gibson, a Polk county farmer.
and forced him to allow him to so on.
Late this afternoon, he was heard of
at Rickreall, Polk county, but so far
has eluded the officers.
Last night when Mrs. McDaniel went
to the basement to get something,
young Ridings went out through the
window. The police were notified and
began to search for him. He went to
his mother's rooms at the O. K. room
ing house and there, it is believed, se
cured a roll ot blanKcts and the re
volver. He slept somewhere last night,
but only aftor he had been compelled
to throw away his roll of blankets at
Thirteenth and Court streets.
This morning he started across the
Polk-Marion bridgo and when Frank
Gibson tried to stop him to talk with
him, he shoved the gun in his ribs and
demanded to be let alone. Then he
ran on into Polk county nnd so far is
still at large.
His hearing, bctoro Jurtge Busnoy
was to have taken place this afternoon
at two o clock.
