22. Thirteen hundred and fifty mea
and women will be invited to a mon
ster at home to be given, by the' ex
tension division of the University of
Oregon in Portland, November 25, in
co-operation with the Central library
staff and with alumni. Every one of
those invSted will be a student of the
university.
Th 1,350 all live in Portland, and
they are the students of the extension
classes and the correspondence-study
department in Portland alone. Last
vear there were only 600 of them. The
sudden growth has been so great that
the university has been put to it to
meet the demand.
Having 20 Portland classes in oper
ation, Borne meeting weekly, others
every second week, and having an en
rollment in each of from 25 to 230,
the extension division decided to try
to eet the members acquainted with
Lone another and with the significance
of the extension movement.
Hence the novel party, which will
be given in the big north gallery of
the Central library, and will be in

The orders received from the navy

serve fleet proceed at once to the Pu

vice. All ships now being repaired at
their home yards arc directed to pro
ceed to the Puget Sound yard as soon
as rctiairs are completed' and remain

SUBMARINE SXNKS WAS EHXP
Seattle, Wash., Nov. 22. Federal of
ficers today were investigating the il
legal smuggling of 1.008 bottles of
whiskey shipped into Seattle from San
Francisco in boxes marked beer.
Permits calling for b"eer shipments
and issued in the regulnr manner were
attacned to the individual boxes, ac
cording to law. Hut each consignee,
when questioned by tho authorities de
clared they had not ordered the liquor.
Drv squad officers who discovered
the shipment while checking over the
liquor brought hero aboard tho steam
ship Governor which arrived Tuesday,
believed the shipment wus engineered
by one of the boot legging syndicate-
here.
Labels indicated the .shipment was
from the California Ktute Wine com
pun" of San Francisco.
Drv sauud raiders later went to a
Tost street warehouse and seized
more cartons marked beer.

Arc or Rape type In the British chan
nel on November' 14, the admiralty an
nounced today.
"The submarine sank besides six
hostile merchantmen and the Norwe
gian steamer Ullvany, carrying- war
material for the French government,"
the announcement said, .

wheeze, "Stick around and we'll open
a keg of nails" was circulated among
dry squad offiders searching for
smuggled liquor on the waterfront to
day. They drove axeti Into the heads
of 18 kegs marked "spikes". Each
keg contained naals which covered
covered smaller kegs containing whis

Brewster Valley Man
Won Ranch Because
of Wilson's Election
. .Tames Laird, a well known resident
of Brewster Valley, was one of the
men who profited financially by tho
re-election of Woodrow Wilson as
president of the United States. In an
interview with a newspaper man at
Marshfield, Saturday, Mr. Laird said
ho bet his automobile truck against a
30-acre ranch that President Wilson
would be re-elected. He said a neigh
bor woman was a very ardent supporter
of Mr. Hughes and insisted that her
husband make the wager. Mr. Laird
said the eouple with whom he made the
bet were in modest eircumstances, and
consequently he did not intend to en
