I.,' Oct. 10. Although admiral Gleaves received a radio from the Cpnyngham that two of the missing crews of the Kingston hud been picked up otr xsantuckct lightship lute yester day, they had not been landed here at an early hour this morning. A radio dispatch to Admiral Gleaves yesterday stated that the Conynghuiv had picked up two survivors, but the admiral said today that there had been an error in transmission and that so far as he knew uo survivors had been found. Naval officers united today in ex pressing the opinion voiced by Admiral uieaves that only, one German U boat is responsible for the sinking of the six merchantmen. I I Yesterday no word of the German' i raider reached here. The American de-1 Btroyers which returned lato last night. reported no signs or Her or. of her ac tivities, i A recall order-sent out late last night by Admiral Gleaves called all but- one of the destroyers back from Nantucket and they began arriving here iust be fore daylight The possibility that the search for the Kingston's crcw..would be renewed from here today depended largely, naval officers said, on weather conditions No official information as to today's movement of the destroyers was given out. A report that 10 Chinese, members of the crew of the steamer Strathdene were being brought here proved to be with out foundation today. The presence of an unusual number of Chiueso sailors along the waterfront accounted for the rumor. ' A Hue of American destroyers, strung out five miles apart, swept the Atlantic today in the vicinity of Nantucket shoals lightship in a final effort to dis cover some trace of the crew of the steamer Kingston or Kingstonian, sup posed to have been sunk. Up to a late hour during the morning no trace of survivors or anything to indicate that a vessel of this name was among the sub marine victims had been discovered. A DAY WITH A " : REAL REEL STAR JACKIE SAUNDERS (PATHE) Of c urse, when a lucre slip of a girl is. acrialized, she becomes so famous that everybody wants to know how she spends her day, the name of hex' fav orite book, play aiid Btory, -how she fixes her hair, and so on ad infinitum. That's just what, is happening to Jackie Saunders, the eharming little Halboa actress who stars in Pathe's "The Grip of Evil'.' which is really not a serial in the accepted sense of the words, but has been aptly called "!A Master Plot in Fourteen Chap ters." Appearing in a continued photoplay amounts to immortalization, for cellu loid lives wisely nnd well and Jackie Saunders is so excited about it alt Unit she can talk of nothing else. 'Vou see," she said, " 'The Grip of Evil' is something bigger than the usual motion picture, It deals with the probleiiia tliatiBonie to every, riian and woman in their livles, and Amer ica's biggest men, governors, mayors and even tlie president", give their views through it to the. people of the country. Yesterday the force of 50 eirls em ployed at the union faced 2,400 25-pound boxes of prunes, 'yet" great as is this number it falls 200 boxes short of the record established this season for one day 's pack. tip to last night a total of 1,304, (150 pounds of prunes have been received nt the union, and there is little likelihood of a diminution in the flow of the fruit for two weeks. . Never in any previous season hus there been so general a dis tribution of Salem prunes as is in pro gress at the. present time.- Shipments are being made as rapidly as the supply of cars will permit to all parts of the United States, and several orders arc on file from England. .' Manager Paulus confesses to some worry as to how he will clear the floors ia sufficient time to take care of the apple crop, which has already begun to come in. . It is very evident to even the casual observer ' that the union plant must be enlarged, While Oregon growers arc taking ad vantage of what' they consider satisfac tory prices, and arc marketing their prunes as rapidly as possible, California growers aro still holding out for high er prices. . ' Picking of tlio prune crop in this district is almost completed. South of this city tho work is all done. The young orchards have not turned out as well as expected, many of them yielding less than half a ton to the acre, but it is esti mated that tho average yield will be close to 1.700 pounds. Tho old orchards have held out well. : Small prunes have advanced in price from half a cent to one cent a pound, but there is no comfort in this fact to the Salem growers, as there arc no small prunes to be had hcre The market holds steady at from (1 to 7 cents a pound- OREGON RANKS LOW IN NORMAL SCHOOLS U. New York has 18, Pennsylvania 18, Massa chusetts -12, California 8, Washington 3 and Idaho 2. - The report of the Bureau of Educa tlon shows that even the little Btate of Idaho, with a population only half as large as that of Oregon, Is spending more than twice as much for Normal Schools as Is this state. The same report urges that Normal Schools be located in the railroad Renters with public schools sufficient ly large to give teaching practice to the Normal students, i State Superintendent Churchill's an nual report shows that of the 6055 teachers in Oregon last year but 791, Qr 13 per cent, were Normal School graduates. The same offioial estim ated that 1000 new teachers are need ed each year and the present Normal school is turning out hut 150. INDOOR LIFE MAKES FAT . . . TEY OIL OF KOEEIN TO KEEP I, WEIGHT DOWN, OE TO EE DUCE SUPEEFLUOUS FAT. '. People who are confined within doors and who are deprived of fresh, invigor ating air and exercise must take pre Qaution to guard against over-stoutness, as fat acquired by indoor life is unhealthy and a danger to the vital organs of the body. Lack of exercise in the fresh air is said to weaken the oxygen carrying power of the blood, so that it is unable to produce strong mus cles and vitality and the formation of unsightly and unhealthy fat is the re sult. I If you are 15 or 20 pounds above nor mal weight you are daily drawing on your reserve strength and are constant ly lowering your vitality by carrying this excess burden. Any persona who are satisfied in their own mind that the are too stout are advised to go to Central Pharmacy or a good druggist and get a box of oil of korcin capsules, and take one after each meal and one just, before retiring at night. Even a few days treatment has been reported to show a noticeable reduction in weight, improved digestion and a re turn of the old energy; footsteps be come lighter and the skin less flabby in appearance as superfluous fat dis appears. j Oil of korein is inexpensive, cannot 'injure, and helps the digestion. Any person who wants to reduce 15 or 20 pounds is advised to give this treat ment a trial. ' Ton can mane ana save mon- ey by reading the Journal's New Today columns.
