Several Big Horn Sheep
Survive in Stein s Range
University of Oregon, Eugene, Oct. 7.
Although much of Oregon has
been settled for more than 40 years,
there are still spots where game birds
and animals are as plentiful as they
were a century ago. Along Malheur
lake the flight of- water fowl some
times makes a roar -as loud as water
falls. In Utein's mountains in Har
ney county there" are still several
thousand antelope and a few big horn
sheep.
The foregoing is on the authority
of Alfred Sheltonr specimen, collector
for the zoology department of the
state university, who with W. A. Kuy
kendall, a Eugene druggist who makes
hobby of bird collecting, has re
turned from a 700 mile trip through
Crook, Harney and Lake counties.
The two collectors left Eugene on Sep
tember o, and drove to JNnrrows, Harney
county, by way of the McKenzie pass,
Bend, Brooking station and Burns. One
day they went 40 miles without seeing
tree or a drop or water.
Tpey succeeded in obtaining more
than ISO specimens, several of them
rare. Among the rare ones is a king'
let, a very small yellow-brown desert
bird; four pigmy rabbits, the smallest
of the rabbit family; several desert
magpies, and a couple of specimens
of yellow-headed blackbirds, a species
found in the pine and jumper groves
of the mountains. Mont of the mam
mals had already gone into winter quar
ters. The cold nights had also forecd
the migratory birds southward before he
arrived.
Htein's range runs to 10,000 feet,"
said Mr. Hhelton, "and the desert
comes up to its base. With the excep
tion of one gulch of trees, there is not
an evergreen on the 40 mile length of
the range, except quaumgasp."

Catarrhal Deafness Cannot Ba Cured
by local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure catarrhal
deafness, and that is by a constitutional
remedy. Catarrhal Deafness is caused
by an inflamed condition of the mucous
lining of the Eustachina Tube. When
this. tube is inflamed you have a ram
bling sound or imperfect hearing, and
when it is entirely closed, Deafness is
the result. Unless the inflammation
can be reduced and this tube restored
to its normal condition, hearing will be
destroyed forever. Many eases of deaf
ness are caused by catarrh, which is an
inflamed condition of the mucous sur
faces. Hall's Catarrh Cure acts thru
the blood on the mucous surfaces of the
system.
We will give One Hundred Dollars
' for any case of Catarrhal Deafness that
cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure.

"Probably many Americans do not
know that the Philippines have a uni

America," said Mr. Gorospe. "The
University of 8anto Tomas, in Mnuila,
was founded by the Jesuits, three
years after the settlement of James

"The number of native teachers in
the islands is rapidly increasing with

9,000 natives engaged in the work."
Mr. Gorospe expressed delight with
