California Hops Are
Bringing Good Prices
I. Portland, Ore.. Sept. 21. The Cnli-
. forniu hop market is booming. The
price nun uecn run up lo JO criud mm
buying is on a very large scale. At the
' same time, the market for new hops
in Oregon and Washington, is almost
neglected by eastern buyers. The trade
here is nt a loss to explain the reason. '
Some of the dealers believe it w due to
erroneous reports sent east. as to the
quality of northwestern hops, while oth
lers think the movement in California is
purely speculative. '
I Whatever mav be the reason, there
is a sprenl of 6 or 7 cents between the
price of California and Oregon hops.
There is no reason for such n wide dif-.

picking started. Furthermore, there ist
F.omn mold in the California croo this
' year, as shown by samples that have
been received here.
I The brewing business in the enst is
Inrge and this may have stimulated the
j brewery demand for western hops. Beer
sales iii the United Stntes in August in
creased 1.429,735 barrel over the .same
month lat year. This is a 30 per cent
gain and is -the biggest on record. This
one month's beer increase means a larg
er hop consumption by 9,000 bales. The
trade is in hopes that the eastern de
mand will soon turn to hops grown in
this state. At anr rate it is certain
I that prices in Oregon must soon ad
vance, or niiiurnin prices iiccinic.
Seven thousand bnles of California
hops have been sold in the past few
days. Hie highest price, cents, was
paid for 500 bales of Sonomas yester
day. Mendocino hop were sold at 1.1 1-2
cents and Sarramentos at 10 1-2 cents. I
I The first sales cf Oregon clusters
' were reported yexterdny at H to 9 cents. I
rThe Hnkriede crop of 100 bules was sold
at Eugene and Senvey bought a carload
jnt Brownsville. - Ten cents was offered
for Yakima hops-and turned down bj'i
the grower. I
The McClellan crop of 125 bale of.
fuggles at -Snlem nas sought yesterday j
by McNeff Bros. This is about the last
-lot of fuggles left in the state. '
f
Hog Prices Good. I
r. There was a better supply of livestock
ion the market yesterday. Nearly 20
loads arriving at the North Portland
jards. of which eight loads came from
'Coos Bay.
The market was steady throughout.

Serbs Defeat Bulgars.
Paris, Sept. 22. The Bulgarians have
sustained a heavy defeat at the hands
of the Serbians on the Zbrosko, it was
officially announced today, and have
also been pushed back by the French.
Pursuing their advance in the Broda
river region, the Serbs have reached
Vrbani. north of Fiorina after repulsing
the Bulgarian attacks. French troops
cleared the entire region northwest of
Armen-sko'of the Bulgarians and pro
gressed, after heavy fighting, to the
heights dominating the Fiorina-Poplin
fond.
German Attack Repulsed.
Paris, Sept. 22. A most vicious Gor
mnu attack on the new French lines
north of the Somme along the Le Priez
Knneourt front was stopped short by
French curtain fires last uight, it was
officially announced today. The Ger
mans were driven back to their own
trenches, losing heavily.
Kaiser at the Front.
Copenhagen, Sept. 22. Kaiser Wei
helm has arrived at the Kovel front ac
cording to advices received here today
and it is believed that Von Hindenburg
is about to inaugurate a drive against
Russians.
Warships Shell Bulgarians.
Salonika, Sept. 22. Allied warships
shelled Bulgarian camps at Neckhori,
near the Gulf of Orfaui, with satisfac
tory results, it was officially announced
today.
Allies' Transport Sunk.
Berlin, Sept. 22. via wireless . to
Saycille, L. I. A German submarine
sank an enemy transport, completely
filled with troops,'in the Mediterranean
on September 17, it was officially an
nounced today.
The transport sank within forty
three seconds.
The Berlin statement made no men
tion of the fate. of the soldiers aboard
the transport. Accepting the state
ment that the transport went down in
forty-three seconds, ns true, it appears
probable that few if any persons were
rescued unless other vessels were iu
the immediate vicinity.
Aviators Sunk Submarine.
Berlin, via wireless to SayviJe, L. I.,
Sept. 22. Austrian seaplanes bombard
ed and sank the French submarine
Foucaus iu the southern Adriatic, said
an official statement from the Aus
trian ndmirality foday.
The submarine's crew, composed pf
two officers and 27 men were rescued
and made pjrisoners by the aviators
and later 'turned over to a torpedo
boat.
The two French officers were trans
ported back to an Austrian harbor by
Austrian! aeroplanes. This was prob
ably the first time in' history when an
air' machine defeated an under-the-water
craft in battle and then carried
awny prisoners.
The pilot of the Austrian plane was
Lieutenant Cclezeny and the observer,
Lieutenant Von Klimberg. Another

Some Brief Items
From Willamette
What is to be expected of a college
gentleman was the general theme of
resident Doney's address at the first
Willamette chapel service of the year
thin morning. Ho defined the three
types Of college students as the scholar,
the business and executive group and
the shirker. In his estimation there are
very few enrolled in the latter group at
Willamette. The three requirements for
the worker, the man who plays the game
fair are: efficiency, ji fine sense of
honor, and devotion.
A rousing series of college songs In
upper Classmen served to liven up
things generally. Silence was the dom
inant note among the freshmen who
are not destined to remain ignorant of
the real Willamette spirit for the songs
are sung so often that they are soon
learned. i .
