Land Dreadnaughts
Washington, Sept. 20. Twenty sov-
en caterpillar tractors, similar to those
converted into "land dreadnaughts
tanks' by the British in northern
France, will soon be a part of the Unit
ed States army war paraphernalia. The
same I'eoria, 111., firm which supplied
the British with the engines for the ar
mored fighting monsters, has contract
ed to build the huge tractors for this
government. They nre to be delivered
within ninety days. '
The tractors will weigh between 12
000 and 14, Out) pounds. This is consid
erable below the weight of the tractors
furnished for Great Britain. T'.ieir
price will be $4,775 each. If will cost
$1,000 additional for encasing them in
armor. i
I olonel Rice of the ordnance depart
ment explained today that while these
tractors could easily be turned into
laud drendnniiglits similar to the Brit
ish "tanks", it is unlikely this will be
done.
"Conditions here would not cnll for
such engines of war," said Colonel
Hire. "In the first place, it is not
likely that war in America would de
velop into trench warfare because of
the enormous distances, except where
