The Tigers to day have the best chance of the sea son to crowd the Hed Sox from their chosen pinnacle and step into the lead in the American lenguo. They are just half n game behind the champions. This afternoon tho Tigers will meet the Yanks at Detroit while the Hed Sox will remain idle. If tho Tigers win they will be just three points behind for the leadership in Han Johnson 's circuit. The Dodgers, newly returned to their pet plnce at the top of the ladder, al so face serious difficulty. The 'Phillies by downing the Cardinals while the Dodgers are breaking even with the Pirates again stepped to the fore and now arc only a game in the rear. Should the Pirates beat the Dodgers today and uie i niiues score nnotiier success over the Cardinals, the Phillies will lead t'.ie circuit. ' The White Sox Inst a peg in the fight for the Johnson limiting when they dropped a game to tho Browns and their chances backslid considerably. - The National league race promises to stay just as close as it now is. Brook lyn pitchers, after a short lapse, again are pitching winning bnll and the club backed by the encouragement of the Brooklyn fans, is nt home for the re mainder of the season. Philadelphia's stock went up when Alexander turned in a well pitched vic tory over the Cardinals. The Dodgers have Pittsburg to battle and the Phil lies are engaged in conflict with the Cnrdiuals. Neither of these clubs should offer serious obstacles to the leaders, although Philadelphia prob ably will have more trouble with the Cardinals than Brooklyn does with the Pirates. The Braves looked a little better when they won one game from the Cubs and battled the Chicagoans tu a tie in the second. John Evers returned to besutown and wntched the games from tne licncu. lie is expected to get back in nn i form and his presence will have a stimulating effect ou the Stnlliugs team. There is, however, a niost gloomy prospects for the Braves, for Knbbit .Maraiiville is out of tho game with a pair of smashed digits and a broken nose. Athletes Go Abroad. New York, Sept. 13. Assorted pitchers were hammered un mercifully at Salt Lake. The Angels rallied in the seventh nnd banged Piercy and Fittery for seven runs. Salt Lake played errorless ball nnd gave its heavers high class support but could not handle the torrid drives that Mnggert, Koemer anu other An gelic ciiilgeliueii sent whistling to the horizon. Yesterday's big league hero was Ty Cobb. As a little help in Detroit's fight for the American league pennnut, Ty banged out four hits, two of them being circuit smashes. The Tiger sluggers fell on the Indian hurlers ior 10 sufe blows. Znck Wheat, Brooklyn's center field er, hit safely in each game of tho dou ble header "with Pittsburg, thus com pleting a string of 25 consecutive games in which he has hit safely. A pinch single by Fred Merkle saved the Dodgers from being -shut out in the second game by Al Mnmmaux. Dick Rudolph entered the ironman class by pitching two games against Chicago, winning the first one. The second was a tie. The Giants won their sixth straight game whea Rube Benton downed Cincinnati. St. Frisco, calmly handled by Geers won the 10,000 Empire. State stake in three straight heats. The event at tracted nine starters. Among others, the famous Mabel Trask, who was the favorite, was in the race. St. Frisco set a new record for tho race in the second heat, which he made in 2:0.1 3 4. Al Mack, driven bv Murray, flashed past Mabel Trask in the second heat, within 20 yards of the finish, to win second money. No, Maudie, dear, colleges never get so old as to loaf their faculties. Evervone agrees that "Tex" Stoud- enmeyer's band has given Salem a dandy series of concerts this season, and it gave them' from one of the fin est bandstands in the northwest too, which was Jo Albett's fault. T. M. Livesloy said yesterday that he thought he'd had about enough trouble this hop time without that "practical quarantine" story, and it seems reasonable. No polities in this whatever, but if a brick crop Is part of the penitentiary business why isn't a flax crop! Politeness is more in the tone of voice than in words.
