Kite Flying Contest
Was Great Success
A very much interested lot of visitors
were present at the Albert Park Play
grounds yesterday afternoon to wit
iiohs the kite flying contest. The hail
weather conditions in the forenoon
dou lit less reduced the attendance and
probably more kites would have been
entered if it had not have been for the
rain. When it came time for flying
kites, the wind wag just right and some
very good exhibitions were made. There
were all kinds of kites big kites, little
dainty kites ami 'fancy kites. Homo of
them would fly . hut more of tnem would
not. Taking everything in considera
tion, the event was a very successful
one nnd was well worth seeing.
Simon Carbonel, a Filipino boy, was
awarded the first prize on a beautifitj
aeroplane kite that soared five or afe.

was a pair of Winslow roller skates
given by the hnlem Hardware company.
The second prize was given to Eugene
Barnes who had an excellent kite beau
tifully decorated and well made. J he
prize was a Swiss music box given by
(ieo. C. Will. The third prize was
awarded to llcrmojenes Carbonel on a
fancy kite that made a good record in
flying. The prize wag a large box of
cuudy given by Frank S. Ward.
The judges were Jos. Albert, J. O.
Hall and A. M. Cnbler
The playgrounds will close this cv-,
filing for the season, although all may
niHke their farewell visit tomorrow.
There will be no director in charjJj so
parents are expected to accompany iicir
children. On Monday the apparatus
will be taken down and stored for the
winter. The Playgrounds committee
will have ready a full and complete
report of the playground business in a
short time.

Iowa has a motor vehicle now for
each 13 people, California one to each
15 people and Nebraska one to each
10, while New York has as many as
30 inhabitants to every car. A strik
ing feature brought out by a compari
son of the registration statistics of
July 1 and those recorded at the first
of the year is tho stability and
normal progress of the automobile
induntry.
The average increase in registra
tion in the I'nited States for the en
tire year of 1015 was 30.0 per cent;
for six months of 1010 the average is
21 per cent, or approximately 40 per
cent on a yearly basis, since the reg
istration taper ' off to some extent
during the last six mouths of the year.

Everybody in Town
To See Great Circus
The greatest show on earth is in
town.
Miles upon mites of glittering splen
dor, the monster blond-sweat ing be
hemoth of holy writ, the raging deni
zens of the jungle, the huge imchv-
derma, Brobdingnnginn wonders from
every quarter of the civilized nnd un
civilized globe all are here, nnd the
population is rising to the occasion with
all of the old time enthusiasm.
Hard times, whatever that may mean,
seems to have worked no change in the
Barnum & Bailey aggregation. The show
is as big and bright as ever.
Thousands of people saw the' street
parade this morning, and it is the con
sensus of opinion that a better parade
never ambled and rumbled its way
through the streets of Salem. Blaring
bands in gilded chariots, open dens of
wild animals, wagons and dens closed
and enveloped in mystery, gorgeously
appareled men and women mouuted up
on beautiful horses, floats and tab
leaux wagons typical of many legends
of many countries, made up a pageant
well conceived to lure the normal hu
man being nnd his wife nnd his off
spring and his mother-in-law to the
dhow grounds.

CIRCLE BEGINS WORK OCT. 1
Members of the Chautauqua Beading
Circle met at the home of Mrs. O. A.
Chapel one afternoon last week to con
sider plans for the coming year.
The reading course will be directed by
the following named books, "The Ger
man Empire Between Two Wars,"
"France Under the Republic," "The
Things Men Fight For," and "Bel
gium, the Land of Art," which prom
ises a profitable and interesting year of
study.
The books are being ordered so as to
be ready for the opening discussion
which will be the first of October.
