Mr. Houston, of Portland, manager of a patent' roofing establishment, made a weeks end visit at the C'romley farm. There is considerable mold in the hop yards, but such hops are left unpicked. Mrs. B. I. Ferguson and Miss Mary Mitty are both afflicted with' rheumat ism. - - Mr. B. I. Ferguson has a good crop of navy beans, part of them pulled. Joseph Schrwe, who had his nrm injured by being stuck by a grapple fork while hoisting straw into his barn about two weeks ago, is steadily improving. and it is hoped will soon be able to resume his regular work. EVERGREEN BLACKBERRY INDUSTRY The big industry that is now occupy ing the attention of many of the people of the valley is the harvesting of the evergreen blackberries. From l,t500 to 2,000 crates are shinned daily from this station to the cannery These berries grow wild in the fence corners ' and woods and slashings and arc the source for a good revenue to all those who engage in picking and shipping. Some of the farmers last year planted a 'few acres to experiment with under culti vation and are so well pleased with the result that many acres will be planted before another year. Gervais Star. Car Shortage Felt Near Here. Owing to the shortage of -cars-on the Southern Pacific railway, the Sheridan Lumber company has been compelled to shut down- its 'mill- and logging camp, thereby throwing about 1100 men out ot employment. A large amount of tho timber used by the Sheridan mill is cut in Polk county. Polk Prunes Going East. ; About twelve carloads of green nrunes hnve been sold by growers in this vicinity to parties from Washing ton and Idaho who are having the Iruit packed and shipiwxl to Eastern cities where they are sold at a handsome price. H. L. ('rider is furnishing about ten carloads for Washington parties who have a crew of packers at work in the Barham warehouse preparing the fruit for shipment. ; - Mrs. Soehren Entertains. Mrs. W. POLK COUNTY FAIR. Knt lies are continuing to come in for the Polk county fair, which opens here on Tuesday, September l!Mh. In addi tion to the regular premiums numerous special prizes will be offered. The busi ness men of Perrydale have announced that they wilt offer special prizes for stock cattle judging, npen.Ju all boys and girls. The first prize will be 2 in cash ami a trip to t lie state fair wilh all expenses paid; second prize, 2.50; third, 1.5ll; fourth, ifl.OO; fifth 50c.
