In concluding our earnest campaign
to keep Snlem money Salem-made here
at home for Salem trade, we are won
dering if the Commercial club is giving
the members who make its existence
possible any service in return for their
expenditure of time and money.
There is no argument but that a com
mercial club is a fine investment, but
to be efficient and deliver the goods
it must be steered in the right direc
tion. The Commercial club will tell you,
"We get the industries here, the rest
is up to them; we can't make a mar
ket for them." Now, the minute a
prospective industry learns that, once
here, all interest in its welfare and
future is dropped, they will locate in
a place that will get behind the insti
tution, boost it and create a market,
at least amongst the home folks.
We have' one of the finest bakeries
on the coast here in Salem the Royal.
Nowhere will be found a cleaner, more
modern or more sanitary plant. As
equipped it can produce sufficient
bread for every home in Salem.
It is a member of the Salem Com
mercial club.
It has never had any real, honest-to-goodnesB
support.
But the Commercial club scurried
around and now announces a new $30,
000 plant. Meanwhile the local bak
eries are pushed to the limit to pay
their men. How long will they all last!
When tho club needed a live man for
secretary some months ago, no man in
Salem, population 17.500, could be
found to answer that description. So
a live man was brought from Chicago.
We believe the better policy for the
Commercial club to follow is to get
has grown steadily in output since lo
der Co. Mr. Kppley has built up his
patronage upon the merit of high qual
ity and it is safe to predict that his
institution is destined to be one of
Salem's largest manufacturing concerns.
back of and boost the men who are
here. Let the world know that Salem
is a town that boosts her home indns-i
tries and the new ones will come and
gladly.
In conclusion. let us be warned bv
the example of the Portland Chamber J
or Commerce, winch, quoting from the
Oregon Journal is already on the to
boggan becauso it felt called upon to
run the United States instead of at
tempting to solve the distressing prob
lems that have been recently thrust
upon the city of Portland and the Ore
gon country.
It's the business ami the problems
here at home that need our first at
tention, and it is the right of our
home business man to demand as much
of his commercial club.

Too much cannot be said in com
