RUMANIAN ARMY
(Continued from Page 1.)
with a strong army on the border, has
for months been threatening to invade
Rumania unless she joined the allies.
119
' Invade Transylvania.
Loudon, Aug. 29. Eighty thousand
Rumanian troops already are moving to
ward the Transylvania frontier for the
invasion of Hungary.
Advance guards of this Rumanian
force have crossed the Hungsriai
boundary in a swift advance on tin
two Transylvanian cities of Hermann
stadt and Kronstndt. It is these forces
which engaged the Teutons in the. Roth
enthurm Pass, 15 miles from Hermann
stadt and in the passes a few miles
from Kronstadt.
The whole Rumanian troop movement
is going forward like clock work, ad
vices received here today indicated.
King Ferdinand's armies, almost com
pletely mobilized and awaiting the word
of war, arc prepared to utriKe quicKiy
on whatever front the Rumanian gen
cral staff determine to start its major
campaign. '
The Germans acted with equal swift
ness in meeting the new enemy In the
Balkans. Dispatches from Lausunne to
day said that the TcptonB closed th
Swiss frontier less than an hour after
Italy declared war on Germany. The
German general staff knew this preced
ed a declaration from Rumania and it
is believed began shifting troops east
ward to reinforce the Austrians several
hours before news of the Rumanian
declaration of war was generally
known.
The first official statement reporting
the capture of Rumanian prisoners came
from the German war office, indicating
that (ierman troops already arc stiffen
iug the Austrian lines along Ruman
ia's frontier.
The whole Balkan war theatre has
been set aflame by Rumania's entrance
into the war. rfo-ally demonstrations
occurred in Athens and the Vcnizclist
newspapers are renewing their demand
that Greece enter the war. Telegraphic
advices from Berlin today indicated
that Germany is watching the Orek
situation with 'some anxiety. From the
same source it was reported that Bul
garia has taken "important military
steps" to counter upon the Rumanian
declaration of war.

Von Mackenson to Command.
The Hugue, Aug. 20. Field Marshal
Von Mackenson, who led the successful
AustroGerman campaign through Ser
bia a year ago, will be in command of
the German-Bulgarian armies operating
against Rumania, according to Berlin
advices today.
The German government is determin
ed to push an aguressive cnmiiaiun
against Rumania, carrying the fighting
to Rumanian sou early in the campaign,
