Continues Contract With Library Board At a called meeting last evening, the board of education decided to continue their present contract with the city library board by which the district pays $1,200 a montlkfor the school lib rarian and $20 a month for an assistant. Mrs. Josephine Gilbert was elected to aliso teach in the fifth grade in a junior high school at the same salary and Mrs. G. E. SAYS MEAT PACKERS BEHIND BREAD BOCfST Washington, Aug. 23 Representative Rainey, of Illinois, announced this aft ernoon he will lay before the federal trade commission data which will show Chicago's meat packing interests are behind the agitation for higher bread prices. Kainey declared the packers, having fixed meat prices, recently got control of one of the largest bakeries in the world and will replace the five cent loaf with a six cent loaf. , Children Cry FOR FLETCHER'S C ASTO R I A Mule Tramples Boy Breaking Every Bone Red Bluff, Cal., Aug. 23. Frank Strong, aged 7, son of Mark Strong, of Stockton, was stamped to death by a mule near here last night, according to word received today. The lad was leading the animal to water and had tied the halter around his body. The aiule became frightened and ran, drag ging the body several hundred yards. It then turned and began trampling on Frank's prostrate tiody, breaking every bone. The- lad came here recently from Stockton to : visit his grand parents, Mr.- and Mrs. J. L. Stillwell. Indian summer weather, with light bzreezes and the temperature between 65 and 80 was en joyed by tho middle west today. Coming in the wake of a hot spell, the cooler temperature was welcomed, not only in Chicago and vicinity, but as far south as El Paso. El Paso last night reported a temperature of 64. At 2 a. m. today Chicago thermdracters were down to 64, and hovered about the 70 mark through the morning. German troops made a powerful attack last night on trenches south of the Somme, south of Estrecs and west of Soyecourt which were cap tured by the French in Tuesday's fight ing, and succeeded in' penetrating the French lines at several points, it was officially admitted today. Tho attack was preceded by an in tense bomhurdmcnt lasting several! hours in winch the whole trench tront south of the Somme was under steady fire. North of the Somme the Germans maintained a fierce bombardent of Freuh first line and communcuting trenches both north and south of Man repas, but there were no infantry at tacks. 'Recaptured Trench. Berlin, Aug. 23, German troops re captured a trench taken by tho French near Estrecs, in fighting last night south of the Somme, it was officially announced this afternoon. When a vote was taken on whether to grant the per mit the council tied and the mayor voted to grant the permit declaring that it would be aa injustice to let one mun operate card tables in a cool drink establishment and not another. Salem Band to Play Here. An open air concert will be given Thursday evening on the court house lawn by the Salem band under the di rection of H. N. Stoudenmeyer. Harry Keil, leader of the Dallas band, will play the concert cornet. Several other members of the Dallas band will also assist in the concert. Mr. Keil will ac company the Capital City band on the excursion to Coos Bay Friday. There will be no bund concert by the local band Saturday evening. Sheriff Orr arrested H. H.
