Getting Somewhere
Lends Enchantment
What is it about the automobile that
lends enchantment to the distance? If
anybody knows, it has been kept as -a
well guarded secret. The average in
telligent observer knows only that peo
ple who ride in automobiles are always
coming from somewhere and going some
where else. If they stop, it is generally
only for a moment. If they stop long
er, it is to look at a tire, or a carbure
tor or to cool an overheuted eugine.
Then they are off again. It doesn't
matter where they are going any more
thnn it matters where they have come
from only a few minutes ago; they will
be coming from the place they are go
ing to in a few minutes more. The
wheels, it appears must be kept mov
ing. Automobiles are seldom in repose
outside of a garage.
Why is it? When the autoists were
pedestrians iu other, and perhaps hap
pier days, they occasionally paused in
their walks. It was one of the delights
of an old fushloned ramble to regale
one's self with the view, to take iu the
scenery, to contemplate leisurely the
landscape. The nutomobilist has no
time to dwell upon vistas or prospects.
He must be getting on. and after spend
ing half the time allotted to his trip
in the morninc or afternoon or even
ing in getting on, he spends the other)
half in uettinir back. That is, what'
time he is not going he is coming; what
time ho is not coming he is going. Stop-i
ping to look at anything s not in nis
line.
At the top of n hill, if the road is
good, he speeds to the bottom; nt the
bottom lie speeds to the top. All of his
landmarks are ahead. The neighbor
hood through which he speeds simply
leads him to the neighborhood towurd
which lie is speeding. He is interested
in a given point along the highway so
long as it is ahead of him; his interest
in it ceases the moment he reaches it.
That cluster of houses in the distance
means to him that he will reach it in
so many throbs of his four, six. eight or
twelve-cylinder engine; that its euvir
oniiients'is picturesque has nothing to do
with the case, ut course tnere are ex
ceptions. With these we have nothing
to do just now. Has it ever been your
good fortune to go autoing with a party
of exceptions?
No criticism is meant, r.veryuouy
knows somehodv who said, lond enough
to be heard across a room, that if ever
he owned an automobile he would not
let it exceed ten miles nn hour, and.
moreover, he would pause nlong the
highway and take in every attractive
view he came to! Everybody in later
experience with this person found that,
when out in his automobile, whether
driving or directing the driving, he act
ed as one who had lost completely the
ability to look sidewise, ami the faculty
of concentrating upon anything save
something a long distance straight
ahead. This may be set (town as tne
rule. In the old days that same man in
a buggy, in a carriage or on horse
back, or out for a stroll, would be con
stantly looking nbout him. solicitous
lest lie should miss something on the
way; now, or since he got his motor
car. he seems to be in n constant state
of anxiety lest somebody may nsk him
to look to the right or' to the left nt
something past which he is flying.
Will this go on perpetually, or shall
we have a reversion to human instinct
nmong nutnist? It is hard to say. The
problem, it appears, is one that each
mini and woman must work out individ
ually. No doubt there are mnny people,
especially invited people, who wodld
rather spend a little time between places
than devote n whole excursion to travel
ing from one place to another. But in
vited people have to be careful. Guests
should not be choosers. People are not
invited on automobile trips with the
idea that they are to be taken some
where, but, rather, with the idea that
thty are to be taken by somewhere.
Tho difference, we are sure, will be
noted. Properly speaking, an nutomo
bile ride is a whirl. You were there,
then you were here, now you are every
where. Then it is time to alight, for
you are back before you realize that
you have gone. Some other evening
you will be called for ngnin when you
will be certain not to see a lot of things
you have missed seeing this time. All
you can do is to thnJik your hosts. They
mean well. They are all hospitable.
They ore all kind. But if you really
want to see some of the beautiful things
of earth that automobile parties never
see. you will hire a hack or walk.

Same Committee to
Have Charge of Dance
King Biug Deckebach does not like
to impose on any of his true and val
iant vassals, but " he feels . just this
way about it: The Committees that
handled the Inst two Cfcerrinn jitney
dances at the armory did such fine work
and gave such general satisfaction, that
he thinks things could not be improved
by appointing new committees for the
farewell jitney dance 'at the armory
Wednesday evening. And while he be
lieves that he is rather imposing on
tnem, yet for the good of the cause, he
has appointed the same committees for
the farewell jitney and has prevailed on
them to accept.
Therefore, it is an ajjijured' fact that
the dance Wednesday evening will-.be as
successful as the three other dances and
that everybody will be- guaranteed a
good time.
