Considerable merriment was evoked in court when Mrs. Grace DeAVolfe, a newspaper reporter, called as a witness, testified that her editor had sent her to the nrchbishop to ask him why he wns bald, fat and had bridged teeth. "Dr. Xew told me," said Mrs. De AVolfe. "that he was fat in San Fran cisco because it was cool, but that if he went to Los Angelic he could become thin over night." District Attorney Tresfon read ex tracts from New'g books in which he predicted that women would be bald in 50 years and that becduse 'they' had abundant hair now was a sign that they lack intelligence. Professor Adolf Harnack, the emi nent German theologian, whose works are known throughout the world, is one of the most conspicuous of the men now lecturing to Germans on peace, with the sanction or tne uorman government. These men began their endeavors in the large cities of the empire on August 1. They desire to prepure the minds of their compatriots for consideration of the war's end and the objects to be at tained by Germany's gigantic struggle. Professor Harnack is a professor of the ology and general director of the Royal library in Berlin. Of his numerous books, "AVhat Is Christianityf " is probably best known to English speak ing readers. In the address iu Berlin he warned his hearers not to expect or demand too much from the results of the war, as Germany must remember the lot of her confederates as well as her own success. He appealed for con fidence in the administration to Chan cellor Von Bethmann-Hollweg, which he said had done its utmost to avert the war. Its attitude toward certain neu trals history would some day justify, Professor Harnack said. APARTMENTS THE NEW MARION APARTMENTS Nelson G.
