YON WEDEL HEADS COMMITTEE
FOR "HONORABLE GERMAN PEACE"
trU?, --,11;
The German national committee for securing an honorable peace has
drafted an address which will be published in a few days calling for support
of Chancellor von Bethmann-IIollweg and the influencing of public opinion
toward moderate peace aims. The signatures to the address indicate the im
portance of the movement, which will begin its work on Angust 1. They in
clude Count von Wedel, general adjutant to the emperor and head of the
movement; Philip Heineken, director of the North German Lloyd; Paul von
Schwaback, director of the Bleichroder bank; Professor Adoiph Harnack and
many important manufacturers, merchants, professors and others. The ad
dress outlines the aims of the committee, steering a eourse between the
pacificists and the pan-Germans.' The latter it characterizes as "annexation
lunatics." It emphasizes the fact that the controversy of the last few
weeks between the peace advocates and the annexationists has had a harm
ful effect anil that it is necessary for the moderates to create uniform views
concerning a basis of peace. The program of the committee includes the de
livery of fifty addresses in as many cities of the German empire by prom
inent Germans. One of the executive officers of the new party outlined its
purposes, saying: "We desire to support the chancellor, but we disagree
with the government's prohibition of discussion of the aims of the war. We
want an honorable peace, but not a peace at any price. Neither do we want
peace delayed by those who would hive us take all our military power en
ables us to get." Von Wedel was foimally governor of Alsace-Lorraine.
WEITE THEM A LETTER TONIGHT
Don't go to the theater, lecture or ball,
But Btay in your room tonight;
Deny yourself 0f the friends that call
And a good long letter write.
Write to the sad old folks at home,
Who sit when the day is done
With folded hands and downcast eyes
And think of the absent one.
Don't selfishly scribble: "Excuse my
haste,
I've scarcely the time to write,"'
Let their brooding thoughts go wan
dering back
To many a bygone night,
When they lost Jjieir needed sleep and
rest,
And every breath was a prayer
That God would leave their delicate
babe
To their tender love and eare.

WHAT JOHN WANAMAKEB FOUND
Scranton (Pa.) Times.
When John Wanamaker, of Philadel
phia and New York, says anything
about merchandising there is back of
what he says a business experience,
first small, then great, with all of its
disappointments and all of its suc
cesses". That is . why shrewd mer
chants everywhere in the United States
listen and stop to think about what
he says.
Mr. Wanamnker, addressing himself
to the Associated Advertising Clubs of
the World, in Philadelphia, - came out
unequivocally and emphatically for the
newspaper as the best medium for ad
vertising. It was unsolicited, this
opinion and here is the way he puts it:
"When this little store closed -.its
doors on its first day's business away
back in 1881 the sum of $24.67 was
found in the old-fashioned till under
the counter; the sixty-seven cents was
left there for making change next
morning and the $24 was taken out by
the founder and spent with the news
papers, which were asked simply to
say that the new store was open and
doing business, and had a good stock
of goods useful to the people.
"Our little allowance of advertising
money went to the newspapers then,
as it goes, nearly altogether, today."
Mr. Wanamaker might have said a
whole lot more about the value of
newspaper advertising and told exactly
the many ways in which it brings cus
tom and makes profit for the busiuess
man, but he contented himself with
giving a plain object lesson of his
practice. The only qualification he
makes is that it pays to advertise in a
good newspaper of "known" circula
tion and the best advertising is clean
and honest advertising.
. Mr. Wanamaker is the country's
foremost merchant prince, which meanB
the world's biggest merchant. Success
is written large over the portalB of his
career. The great store buildings that
he owns are monuments to this success,
a success that Mr. Wanamaker built
up on "advertising in newspapers of
known circulation." The moral is
obvious.
