foregone the pleasures of the seaside I
for the pleasures of the Chautauqua.
Ellison-White's big, white, canvas au
ditorium Is the center of attraction this
week for Newporters nnd visitors alike. I
Commencing Suudny, the Chautauqua
continues until day after tomorrow.
The program is excellent. Victor
Murdock, the Kansas ex-congressmnii,
and the near-nominee for the presi
dency this yenr by the progressives, fol
lowing Rnosevclt'H declinntion. drew nn
appreciative audience Mondny evening
to hear his lecture "Uncle Sam's To
morrow." Mr. Murdock recently return-j
ed from Europe and is now on his wny
to the Orient.
Many people from the valley hnve ar
rived during the week, most "of them
drawn by the double attraction of beach
and Chautauqua.
One of the most pleasant parties of
the season thus far was given by Miss
Pimln I. inn. of Salem, at the I.iun cot
tage, "Stormfield," Tuesday evening j
