(Special to the Capital Journal) Newport has become the meeea for numerous auto mobile parties during the past two weeks. In fact, one of the most notice able features of the season thus far is the increasing automobile traffic to the beach. Dunng the week just passed, cars have arrived from Enter prise and Moro in eastern Oregon, sev eral from Washington and one from North Dakota. The road between here and Corvallis has been considerably improved since last year and motoring is not oeset witn the same difficulties. The route through the Siletz Basin, starting from rails City, will become popular with the motorist this summer, it is believed. To advertise this route, a party of automobiles from Falls City and Dallas will drive to Newport dur ing the next few weeks. This road abounds with some of the finest moun tain scenery in the state. Good hunt ing and fishing are also afforded. The trip can be easily made in a day. The route passes through the Siletz Indian Reservation with its many attractions to the tourist. Adequate garage facilities pre Avail able in Newport. Mrs. H. M. Perry, of Salem, and Mrs. R. IV Churchill, of Albany, are established in the "Miski" 'for an ex tended stay. Mrs. Perry expects the arrival soon of her son, J. C. Perry, also of Salem. C. F. Clnpp, of Portland, passed through Newport during the week on his way to Seal Rocks where be will pass the summer. Mr. and Mrs. A. McKern, of Yam hill, are occupying a cottage at Whit ten's Camp Ground. J. K. Choate,, Jr. of Ashland, ib a southern Oregonian who has arrived at the beach recently. T. A. Livesley, of Salem, was in Newport last week supervising the con struction of his new cottage at Agate Beach. II. J. Glandon and sister, Miss Lizzie Glnndon, of Yamhill, are enjoying the natural beauties of this resort. They are encottaged at Whitten's Camp Ground, Nye Beach. J. A. W. Gardiner, of Albany, is listed among the Hub City people who visited Newport during the past week, i Sir. and Mrs. T. v. iavies ana cmi dren, of Salem, arrived Monday and are residents of Cherry City, Nye Beach. Mrs. Elva R. Estes, of Salem, has arrived in Newport and will pass the summer at her cottage, Sunset, at Nye Beach. Miss Estes is a regular summer resident of Newport. Mr. and Mrs. ('. B. Schoenfeld., of New York "City, are passing a vaca tion at the beach. They occupy one of the French cottages. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Porter, of Cor vallis, joined tne Benton county con tingent at the seaside Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Humphrey and son, Bradford, of Portland, are enjoy ing the hospitality of the Nicolai Nye Beach. Miss Cynthia Baird, of Corvallis, and Miss Irene DeArmond, of Vale, have arrived in Newport and will enjoy an outing here. They are located in Judge Woodcock's cottage at Arcadia. Miss Baird is a student of the Mon mouth Normal school and Miss De Armond of the Oregon Agricultural College. Carl Shoemaker, of Rosebnrg, State game warden, after passing severnl days with Mrs. Shoemaker, has re turned home. Mrs. Shoemaker will re main until the end of the season. H. J. Miller, of Philomath, was a Friday arrival. Mr. Miller is regis tered at the Copeland House. Mrs. W. F. Breckou, of Kimberley, Idaho, is one of the numerous Gem state visitors in Newport. Mrs. Breck on is staving at the Grand. Mrs. Charles J. Behnabel and daugh ter, Katharine, of Portland, will ar rive in a few days to pass a vacation at Nye Beach as guests of the Nicolai. Mrs. Gustave Bruere and children, of Portland, arrived the latter part of the week and have opened the Bruere beach eottage at Agate Beach for the sea-Miu. Dr. Bruere will join his family Mrs. Richard T. Ely and children, of Walla Walla, are exacted to arrive shortly to occupy the Ely cottage, "Outlook," at Agate Beach for the II BOD. Clarence Bowlby, of Portland, after passing a fortnight at the seaside, left Thursdar morning for his home in the Rose City. He intends to return later in the season for another visit. Mr. Bowlbv's brother, Stanley Bowlby, who is' well-known to Newjwrt visitors, la with Troop A of the Oregon Nation al Guard now on duty on the Mexican border. , , Mrs. J. C. Lang, of Portland, is the house guest of Mrs. George O. Savage, of Salem, at the Savage summer home, "Cherry City." Mrs. Lang is a sister of Mrs. Savage and contemplates an all-summer sojourn at the beach. Mrs. Hockey Mnson, wife of a prom inent druggist of Albany, accompanied by her two children, arrived Saturday and will occupy the Mason cottage un til September 1. Mr. Mason will join his family later in the season. Mrs. J. O. Hall, of Portland, reached the beach last Friday and is passing a iew uays at tne lopeiand. Phillip Paucher, of The Dalles, ar rived at the New Cliff House the last of the week. Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Clapp and baby, or .Portland, are domiciled in their sum mer cottage at Seal Rocks. Mr. and Mrs. Squire Farrnr, of Salem, are expected to open their Seal Rocks cottage shortlv. The Walker Brothers have arrived in Newport from Forest Grove, where they have been passing the winter,and have opened the C sino Dance hall, at Nye Beach, for the summer. The first dance wilLbe given Saturday night. The Casino dances, coming three times a week, are very popular with the sum mer people who attend them in large numbers. Mr. and Mrs. B. T. Randall and chil dren, of Salem, have established them selves in their summer home at the corner of Thompson and Beach streets. The Randalls, who have been coming to Newport regularly for several years, intend to remain until September 1. Mr. Randall before becoming a rest dent of Salem, lived in Woodburn where he served a term as mayor. His son, Charles Z. Randall, an attorney of the Cherry City, is now with Com pany M on the Mexican border. E. A. Dunningham, of Salem, arrived in Newport Tursdny and will pass sev eral davs here. Mr. and Mrs. ,1. W. Miller, of Paris, Illinois, are among the Eastern people at Nye Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Miller are enjoying the hospitality of the Nicolai. Mrs. Ira Mehrling and daughter, Miss Ella Mehrling left the last of the week for their home in Falls City, af ter passing ten- days at Nye Bea'h. Miss Mehrling will enter the State Normal school in Monmouth this Fall. E. L. Alford' and famil', of Lewis ton, Idaho, left last week on their return home. The trip was made by automobile. Mr. Alford, who is editor of the Lcwiston Tribune, is one of the best known men in Idaho. J. B. Seeley, of Woodburn, arrived at the Copeland House several days ago for a short stay. Mr. and Mrs. H. Kinney, of Grass Valley, is enjoying an outing at Nye Bench as guest of the McAllister House. Mrs. M. M. Ellis has returned to her home in Dallas after passing several woeks at the Ellis cottage at Nye Beach. Regular Newport visitors will miss a familiar face on the beach this sum mer in the person of Joseph Patterson. Mr. Patterson has passed his summers at Newport for the past ten years. He recently accepted an important posi tion with the Carnegie Foundation and is now in the East. Mrs. Ella J. Metzger, of Dallas, who was the house guest of Mrs. M. M. Ellis, at the Ellis cottage, for a fort night, has returned to her home . Mr. and Mrs. William Struthers, duughters, Selma, Helen and Berniee, and son, Jack, of Kureka, Washington, have arrived in Newport and opened their cottage at Nye Bench for the summer. The Struthers are regular summer residents of this resort. The name of ""'ir cottage is "The Kureka." Mrs. M. V. Smith, of Dallas, is en joying a sojourn at the beach as a guest of Mrs. M. M. Ellis, also of Dallas. Miss Leota Gilbert, of Walla Walla, is a guest of Mr. and Mrs. William Struthers at "The Eureka." (V L. Parrish, of Corvallis, was among the arrivals of Sunday and registered at the Abbey. Mr. Parrish is connected with the Oregon Agricul tural College. Mr and Mrs. Franzo Krnshke, of Portland, are guests Of the McAllister House. They are here on their honeymoon.- , , , B. A. Rhoten, of Salem, arrived in Newport Saturday and passed a few days here. Mr. Rhoten is connected with the Statesman Publishing Com pany. He erected a cottage at Nye Bench last summer. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Sherman, of Salem, arrived Friday and are estab lished in the eosy little" cottage, "Jus-Fo-To" at Nye Beach. Mrs R. E. Wonder and daughter, Miss Minnie Wonder, of Monmouth, are included among the guests of the McAllister House. Miss Mary Baker, of Eugene, Is pass ing the summer at this resort. B.- Stevens ad daughters, Mary and Margaret arej domiciled at the Stevens cottage. The Stevens are Albany residents. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Brown and son have returned to their home in Port land after passing six weeks at the Hotel Ni'iolai, Nye Beach. Mr. Brown is manager of the Studobaker branch in Portland. Mr. and Mrs; J. F. Weinert, of Air lie, after passing two weeks at Cherry City, will leave iu a few days .for their home. Eugene France, millionaire lumber man of Aberdeen, Washington, lt Friday morning after passing a few days at this beach as a guest of the Abbey. Mrs. J. Hill and Miss Mae Holman, of Albany, are established at the "Bonnie Dew " cottage at Nye Beach for the summer. Walter S. Fisher, city editor of the Roseburg Review, arrived the first of this week to pass his summer vacation. He expects to remain for two weeks. Mrs. Sarah E. Moore and children, I of Eugene, are numbered among the Lane residents at Nye Beach. The Moores plan an indefinite stay. Dr. J. A. Masey, of Turner, accom panied by his wife and children, ar rived Thursday for a short vacation. Ellis. Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Durkheimer, of Portland, are domiciled in one of George Savage's cottages at Cherry City for a two weeks' stay Mrs. E. H. Norman and daughter. Miss Marian Norman, and Mrs. L. A. Dixon, of Portland, are established in the "lle-way" cottage for an in definite sojourn. J. H. Fitzgerald, manager of the West Coast Railroad and Navigation Company, of Portland, arrived in New port Saturday and registered at the Hotel Kelley, Nye Beach. Miss K. Gertrude Irwin, of Dallas, is aisong the week's registrations at the New Cliff House. R, J. Stiehl, (V J. Stiehl and O. D. Stiehl, of Beach North Dakota, arrived in Newport Saturday by automobile. Their route was through the states of Montana, Idaho and Oregon. They left Tuesday on the return trip via the Red Trail. The car was shipped by boat to Portland. A. M. Irwin, of Richmond, Oil., is included among the many out-of-the-staters who are enjoying the many and varied attractions of this resoit. Mr. and Mrs. J. (J. Harrison, of Brownsville, arrived Saturday and are located in one of the cottages at Whitten's Camp Ground. Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Robson, of Turn er, arrived in Newport Thursday. Mrs. A. Officers in the coast artillery corps of the Oregon militia today begun recruiting their companies to war strength in 'response to an order from Major W. W. Wilson, acting adjutant general.
