Finney.) . Editor t'upiul Journal: ' A writer said, "A thought,' even if it is a thought once expressed, is no longer your own." I hope this may be true of the prospective progression of Wa conda, but'a thought is not enough, it needs publicity, and a eommuuity to bring about the opportunities. It is not right to plant over a thousand acres in fruit in Waconda 's rich Mis sion bottom section, the most fertile land in Oregon and leave it in obsi ur-j it v, to do so is stupidity. If Hood Hiver had done th.it way, her fruit would not now bo shipped to Egypt. We hear of' $30,000 loganberry juice distilleries to be placed in the valley, who has told them that we want a $50,000 plant at Waconda, that soon our roads will be black with weary horses driving loads of loganberries to Brooks. That last year if the Aspin- wall dryer had burned down instead of partially burning, the growers would have lost their berries, thereby in juring labor and production, our fruit tastes better than iriut shipped ttious ands of miles for canning purposes. And last rear we hauled our delicious B.irtlett pears to an overcrowded Sa lem cannery, anil they said they were too crooked, and oh ye prohibitionists, whv knock the hops on your neighbors estate, you insulted the Oregon hop growers, fruit and grain growers when you voted against production, we need starch, and potato Hour lactones to take up the surplus ot overproduction. Our neighbor W. H. Egan grew a field of potatoes in lUl.i it stretched out in one long pit, as long as Commercial street in halcra, there was no sale for them. There should be a state agricultural association and its representation, the lairv. hop, fruit, potato and gram branches should have their individuali ty, all under one head collectively, for marketing, to compete with the specu lative associations. Where is the wise head to give the though perpetual mo tion? W. Al Jones is running for rep resentative, T speak not for Al, but for his knowledge of farming, and because he his the ability, and dares to do, he is a Waconda native son, the Journal s 18.000 renders should vote for him. T speak for W. C. daunt, for school su perintendent, teachers, would find him kind, considerate and able, highly ed ucated in the enst, principal of the Stayton schools and of several Oregon high schools, he also taught the tenc'.i- ers in Salem. Tie came west in 1007 during the hard times, and could find no place to rest his weary feet, until a voice over the telephone, from Va itonda, asked this very talented man if . he could milk cows, this was the first that swung his western career into place, and we claim him for Wa conda. In behalf of our community, T wish to thank our very talented liter ary society for our entertainment, and the Capital Journal editor for printing my articles about Waconda 's beautiful to'wnsite, and its commercial prospects.
