point to a deciduous fruit erop in Cali
fornia fur nelow normal, according to
the crop report issued today by (Icoige
P. Wcldon, chief deputy state horticul
tural commissioner.
California's deciduous fruits are in a
much poorer conditii-.i rtiiin a year ago,
according to Wcldon. The prospects re
garding citrus fruits and olives is much
better, though it is 11 little earl.?- in the
season to draw conclusions regarding
these crops.

Quarterly Inspection
According to the information received
from headquarters of the Third regi
ment, O. X. Ci., by Captain .Max (iehl
liar this morning. Company M made the
best showing of any company in the
regiment ut the quarterly inspection
which was held March 31 At this time
Company M had iii enlisted men ai
three officers out for inspection which
was 14 more than the nearest competi
tor, Company B, of Portland, which hud
three officers and 02 men out for in
spection.

tary ball will be given by the members
of Company L, (). X. 0., in the Dal
las armory next Kridav night at which
the Governor and his entire staff in full
uniform will be in attendance. Other
prominent officers of the National
(Juard are expected to be present. The
militia boys have been working indus
triously for the past week cleaning ivi
Hie armory and placing it in fine shape
for the affair, which promises to be the
must pleasing event that has taken
place in the city for several years. 100
invitations have been issued and a
good crowd is expected to attend,
among whom will bo parties from
Salem, Independence, Falls City and
McM innville.

Cates Elected to Council.
Lew A, Cates, editor of the Polk
County Observer, was elected Wednes
day evening to fill the position of Coun-eilmnti-nt-largo
made vacant by the
resignation of W. L. Barber. Mr.
Cates how ever ret used to accept the
honor and the office will be filled at
the next regular meeting of the council.
Other officers elected by the council
for the ensuing year are.: City Attorney,
Kd. F. Cond; trensurer, W. (I. assail;
marshal. O. P. Chase; jiight poliseinan,
John Shaw; street commissioner, W. L.
