ROBERT F. COOLEY'S DEATH.
It was with much sorrow that the
community learned of the death of its
honored citizen, Robert F. Cooley, at his
home in this city last Saturday morn
ing, April H, after a prolonged illness.
Robert Franklin Cooley was born in
Clay county, Missouri, January 28, 1837.
In 1S45 he crossed the plains by ox
team, with his parents Christopher C.
Cooley and Nancy Cooley. They spent
the first winter at Champoeg and in the
spring moved to the donation land
claim tnken by the father east of Wood
burn. There he spent his boyhood days,
going to school and receiving what edu
cation the times afforded. Reaching
manhood, he married, in 1860, Rebecca
Hubbard, also n pioneer of 1847, and
they lived on part ot rue farm for near
ly fifty years, moving from there to
this city five and a half years ago. To
thiR union seven children, Dewitt C.
Cooley of Enterprise, Oregon, the late
Mrs. Janett Bonney of Woodburn, Er
nest Cooley of California, Mrs. Inez Car
penter of Woodburn, Fred Cooley o'f
Maricopia, California, Rex Cooley of
Woodburn, and Ralph Cooley, died in
infancy. The five children and widow
survive him. He Uiso leaves a bro
ther, A. J. Cooley of Portland; a sister
Mrs. C. W. Hubbard of Salem, and an
other sister, Mrs. Will Jones of Waldo
Hills. The brother and wife nnd sister
with their husbands attended the funer
al. In writing of Mr. Cooley one cannot
speak too highly of this esteemed citi
zen who was al ready to go to the great
beyond. He was a man of cheery dis
position, generous, of a sympathetic na
ture, one of the strictest probity and
had not an enemy in the world. He was
liked and admired by all. Mr. Cooley
had served as a school -director, also a
road supervisor, belonged to the Grange
and had been a member of tho Wood
burn II. E. church fur thirty years. He
was a staunch republican in politics, a
strong temperance worker, and was al
ways foremost in all movements for the
upbuilding of the community and man
kind. Independent.

Love of justice has triumphed over
love of art in the case of Grace
Isabel Colbron, who has given up
the theater to lecture for single tax.
Miss Colbron made a name for her
self as a member of Donald Robert
son' company and of the Ken Greet
players. She is even better known
as a play writer and the fc-ansla-or
of foreign plays.

The auto-writer is of wood and goes
in the palm of the nand, the pen or
pencil pussing through a bole in one
end The object is to prevent the pupil
from bending the fingers and to get in
to the habit of the arm movement. Mr.
Williams has strong endorsements from
leading educators in city and country
schools and wherever he goes he never
fails to receive an order. He was out
among tho country schools this week
with Superintendent Drilette and nil of
tho teachers of the schools visited be
came much enthused and without hesi
tation gave orders for them. In time
he will be daily receiving orders from
all over the country for thousands. Mr.
Williams has received the baeic patent.

APLIN FOUND GUILTY.
The case of the State vs. Albert Ap
lin, charged with selling intoxicating
liquor to Perle Laverty in Woodburn
In 1910, was tried in the circuit, court,
Salem, Tuesday, Attorney H. Overton
for the defense. A number of wit new
were there from here. L. W. Ouraut
and A. B. Crosby, two Woodburn me
and 8. L. Mercer of Donald, were on the
jury. A verdict of guilty was returned
at nine o'clock yesterday morning, af
ter the jury was out nil night.
Aplin was indicted by the grand jury
on five counts, but Attorney Overton
demurred to four of them ulligcd to
