the meeting held last evening.

ate attention will be the annual Chem
fair.
Besides the Cherry fair, the publicity
department w ill be active this summer
in making trips to Vloodburn, Mb.
Angel and the big trip to Marshfield

Mr. Brick is the proprietor i-- the
Brick Bros, clothing store on State and
Liberty streets and has been active in
Commercial club work and lodge work
since coming to Salem three years ago.
While living in Portland, he was active
in municipal affairs, serving on the tax
payers' survey league and having been
once nominated for the state legisla
ture and again for Multnomah county
commissioner.

rangements wore made today for the re
moval of Mrs. Joseph E. Howard i bod
to Chicago for burial, the coroner ques
tioned her husband, vaudeville singei
now on the Ovpheum circuit, to see if he
could throw any light on the reasons foi
his wife's suicide.
Three weeks ago Mr. and Mrs. Haw
ard were married in I.os Angeles. Mis.
Howard formerly was Countess Mourik
De Beaufort. Her husband departed on
his theatrical travels, planning to meet
his bride here. Upon arriving in Oma
ha, however, it is asserted he registered
undc'an assumed nmie and the wife
had difficulty in locating him. Those
who saw their meeting declare Mrs.
Howard appeared excited, and it is be
lieved there was some talk of jealousy.
Afterward, Mrs. Howard went to an
other hotel with an actress acquaint
ance and at the first opportunity com
mitted suicide by shooting. Her com
panion said she seemed temporal ily in

clicking of newspaper cameras, the Uni
ted States court of the southern district
of California convened here today to
take testimony in the government 's
suit to regain Southern Pacific oil
lands.
Thomas AV. Aiken, of the general land
office, was the first witness. He iden
tified numerous official records and it
was expected lie would remnin on the
stand all day. Hoke Smith, senator
from Georgia, who was secretary of the
interior under Cleveland when the land
were ceded to the railroad, will be a
witness later."
The court was convened in Washing
ton because ninny of the witnesses are

millionaire. The divorce proceedings by

attracted widespernd attention. Later
it was reported she married "Battling
Nelson," the prizefighter, but this
proved untrue. She met Nelson in Eu
rope and the latter said she was the
first woman ho ever loved.
Howard's former wife, Mabel Barri-
son, died two years ago.
May Have Been Cause.
Portland, Ore., April 11. Mrs. Edah
AVithersponn, who two weeks ago secur
ed breach of promise judgment against
Joseph Howard, vaudeville singer and
composer for $ii,R.13, was shocked to
day at the news that Howard's bride
had committed suicide. She declined
to comment on the incident. Howard
ignored Mrs. Witherspoon 's suit, when
she filed it two months ago. Failure to
answer the complaint resulted in de
rauit judgment being taken against

Jealousy the Cause.
Omaha, Neb., April 11 Details of the
suicide of Mrs. Joseph K. Howard, wif
of the song writer and vaudeville per
former, revealed today by the coroner,
showed that she shot herself in the fore

to the night two years before when he

of his first wife, Mabel Harrison, as

claim for compensation for an injury.
The fraudulent workman's claim is one
of the' several which Frank W. Stone,
confessed forger, declares ho wrote at
the dictation of .lohn F. Gillies, former
claim agent of the industrial insurance
commission, who recently was convict
ed for tiis part in the graft operations.
