Liberty streets and has been active in
Commercial club work and lodge work
since coming to Salem three years ago.
While living in Portland, he was active
in municipal affairs, serving on the tax

once nominated for the state legisla
ture and again for Multnomah county

moval of Mrs. Joseph E. Howard i bod
to Chicago for burial, the coroner ques
tioned her husband, vaudeville singei
now on the Ovpheum circuit, to see if he
could throw any light on the reasons foi
his wife's suicide.
Three weeks ago Mr. and Mrs. Haw
ard were married in I.os Angeles. Mis.
Howard formerly was Countess Mourik
De Beaufort. Her husband departed on
his theatrical travels, planning to meet
his bride here. Upon arriving in Oma
ha, however, it is asserted he registered
undc'an assumed nmie and the wife
had difficulty in locating him. Those
who saw their meeting declare Mrs.
Howard appeared excited, and it is be
lieved there was some talk of jealousy.
Afterward, Mrs. Howard went to an
other hotel with an actress acquaint
ance and at the first opportunity com
mitted suicide by shooting. Her com
panion said she seemed temporal ily in

take testimony in the government 's
suit to regain Southern Pacific oil

from Georgia, who was secretary of the
interior under Cleveland when the land
