In order to raise 75 to pay a board and room bill, W. R. Smith. Jr., aged IK a son of u X'evada county rancher, held up the Oak Park branch of the Sacramento bank today and secured .l,OoO in sil ver. Smith wus captured 15 minutes iatc following a running chase of oa? mile, through streets and ncros lots, during which he emptied both uis revolve', i nt his pursuers. Captain A. C. McMurrny. of the Cir tis Oaks fire house, captured Smith as he was crawling through a fence. Mc Murray, who had been notified that the robber was headed toward the engine house, borrowed a shot gun and lay in wait behind the fence. Smith had both his pockets loaded down with silver and was carrying the remainder in a handkerchief." About 200 was scattered through lots sun streets over which the bandit ran. At the police station the young rob ber was badly scared and several times he nearly fainted. His job was purely that of an ama teur. He had pasted stuffing from an automobile cushion over his chin and looked like a wild man. He roamed through the streets o'f Ouk Park wi the "whiskers" on his face several hours before robbing the bnnk. A CORPSE IN HIS BED Portland, Or., April a. Returning to his room at 3 a. m. Charles West found A enrrtse in his bed. He identi fied it as that of Claude M. Baker, who had just been released from the ruck pile. Laker had suffered from heart trouble. WILLAMETTE NOTES The Y. M. C. A., college Y. M. C. A., was addressed by Dr. E. E. Fisher yes terduy afternoon in the Websteriaii hull. The address was on "Health nnd Efficiency." and in it Dr. Fisher laid down some practical rules for the car ing of the health and making the aver age individual more efficient. Some of the things which are of fundamental importance in conserving tho health nve: The care of the eyes, if one is near or far-sighted they should remedy the de fect as soon as possMdo for the eyc-.i are all important in one's work. Poor eyes are cause for headaches and ner vousness, and this makes one less ef ficient if so hindered. The respiratory tract is also an im portant factor to health, and any ob- ' structioii which retards normal breath j ing, as adenoids, etc., should be re- moved, as their presence forces the in ! dividual to breathe through the mouth i und the unwnrmed air may be the cause j for inflammation of the lungs which ! later develops into colds, pneumonia, I etc. I The teeth should also receive con siderable attention, and any defects I should be cared for nt once. "The teeth ! should be washed once a day." said the 'doctor, nnd supolio applied with a short j bristle brush will keep them in excellent ' condition." lhe hair is not so important to health but in efficiency it counts as usually a bald headed man is nt a disadvantage in competition with the huiry-headed j num. I (iood digestion is nll'important to ev I cry individual and yet there are many j who fail to use u proper diet to have good digestion; n mixed diet comprised lot' carbohydrates, fats and proleids is necessary, and no people that are vege Itariuns can expect to lie agressive, in i itiative leaders. It is the meat caters jtlint lend, others follow. "If you men of Willamette are to lie nggre.vsive men jiuid retain the confidence and good (wishes of the Salem people, you must I not overlook tho importance of using a mixed diet." I The doctor then gave a few instruc tions for the care of the feet, 'for the , efficient man must be active in his I menus of locomotion. ! The four properties of cells, of which I till bodies are made up, are: .Nutrition, ; growth, reproduction and function. If I nil of these four properties an tare : fully considered the individual mn ex- !(, , . 1 . . I I. . A l-.-v , u iumi u;e 1111(1 lie l.l- fiidout throughout his life. The doctor strongly advised against the use of intoxicants or narcotics. All in nil it was a very helpful IIMI inter 'st ing lecture und the men present up plnuiled him roundly when he hao 't:n- I isiicd. Nich talks make the meet'.igs 1 highly efficient. I Following the lecture the annual el t, jtien of officers for next year was lu hi, : tin election resulted in 'the f-illnwlig I'oing ciecicu: rcrsideut, . Inrii-s J,';in lilall; vice-president. Raymond Alter buiy; secretary, Wesley lPimrnond; ! treasurer, Lewis Stunrt. " The officers will he installed nt the First M. church at the meeting of nil the officers of the Y. M. C. A.'s in the state, on ' April 22. At this time u big banquet ! will be hold. I Prof. C. I.. Slierniiin was nimble to J meet his clusses toduy owing to a mis hup which befell hi in. The profowor I in one of his recent sojourns into the eountrv was unfortunate in coming into Ad Changes Often contact with the ever present poison oak, and today owing to his intimate ac quaintance with snia "wood" de to remain at homo until he has forgot ten it. Several of the professor's stu dents of psychology are now emfeavor ing to solve the psychology of poi-on oak. Thus far it-sfins to be a deep philosophical question. Superintendent of Grounds C. C. Clark will change the general contour of th Willamette .campus on Wednesday of this week. At present the campus rep resents an early geological era, with its hummocks and valleyettes. Superinten dent Clark has engaged a steam roller to gambol about the college green and its footprints are expected to leave a perfectly -smooth -green carpet where previously a rough uncouth lawn exist ed. Mr. Clark-has also during the past week set out over 130 rose bushes w -he grew from clippings that he made from bushes last fall. The campus will be a beauty spot this summer rather than the familiar eyesore which many have been disgusted with in the past.
