Washington, April 3. Big navv ad

naval committee subjected Secretary
Daniels to a severe cross-examination
today when he agreed to answer ones
tions as to his building and enlistment
recommendations.
"Do you remember having turned
over to the Russian government the de
signs and specifications for our 14-inch
guns, armor and other naval effects

ed Representative Butler.
"I don't!" replied Darnels.

"Armor plate dealers would not pro

He said that the private manufactur

to his duties upon relief of Colonel
Glassford.
The placing of a man ranking as
colonel iu charge of the aviation sec
tion to supercede a captain, is said t
mean that the American government is
coming to realization of the importance
of this arm of the service. European
countries, it has been pointed out, have
for a number of years put the ndmini. -tration
of flying corps affairs in charge
of a minister of aviation.
The recent investigation of the af
fairs of the local aviutiou school as
brought out in the court martial at San
Francisco of Lieutenant Colonel Good
ier, and the unsatisfactory performance
of machines accompanying the present
punitive expedition into Mexico are
snid to have caused the awakening of
those in power to the standing of the
American flying corps.
ROAD IS TO BE IMPROVED
Independence, Ore., April 3. The
county road leading into this city from
the north is to be improved this year.
The county court will pave two miles
or more of roadway and the wagon
bridge and fill will be changed to run
in a straight lino with Main street. This
will cost several thousand dollars.
The city has purchased the right of
wnv for the proposed new road and
will have the houses moved to make
the right of way clear.
The change is due to a dangerous
sharp curve just before entering the
city, where many accidents have occurred.
