the speaker of the evening, has made a
careful and painstaking study of this
vital subject. Some time ago tiio

W. Al Jones announced today that he
would not under any circumstances en
ter the race for sheriff of Marion coun
ty. There has been considerable talk
lately as to whether Mr. Jones would
also throw his hat in the ring, but af
ter considering the matter carefully iio
has decided that for the present, he is
not after any political honors and that
whilo he naturally feels grateful to
ward his friends who wanted him to en
ter the race, there is absolutely nothing
doing. Mr. Jones states that while he
is not a candidate for any office, this
does not prevent him from taking an
interest in Marion county, as he expects
to make Salem his permanent home.
Astoria feels that it is entitled to a
naval base of the first class and has
several good reasons to show why As
toria instead of Seattle should be made
one of the naval bases on the Pacific
coast. The argument advanced by As
toria for securing the naval base, com
pared to Seattle, is that Astoria is the
logical center, on the mouth of the
Columbia, that it has an advantage
over Seattle in the distance to the Ori
ent ami nearness to Alaska, that it is
not on the same open water with a for
eign power and that Astoria has pro
tected approaches and also has quick
approach to the open sea.
