Miss Marie McLeod Home From Alaska Alter spending four years teaching I in a government school at Kot.ebuc, Alaska, loo miles north of the Arctic circle and two ycais .it .lunen, Mss Marie .MacLeod in in tin- city visiting her brother, M. K. MacLeod, of the lliilibaid building. Kotzebue, where the government maintains a school for the benefit of the natives, is several hundred miles farther north than Nome mid his the distinction of being one of the lew schools inaintaiticil by the government north of the Arctic circle, where the sun remains below- the iioriou for sev oral weeks during the winter. In referring to her four vears ex-' periem-e in the far north, iliss Mac-' Lend says that nf all times of the year she was obliged to wear the heaviest or furs. As to the teaching of the nil lives, the idea of the government is for the teachers to instruct the older people more in the wnvs of conking1 and the preparation of foil and ill the making of clothes and the care of ,i home. Middle aged natives attend the schools and learn much in pra' tunl affairs, while the children lire instruct in the regular public school metiiodH. For the past two years she has been teiching in a goVe'rn'iiiont school at .fnnran. Alitska. and here the work is much the snuie and with the same grud-1 ing as in the public schools of Ilia states. - - , After a two week's visit with herl brother, she will return to Juneau. I Having lived so many years in the north, Miss MacLeod has become so acVustomed to the climate that she. rather prefers the Alaska style nfi weather to that offered by the weather; man of Oregon. . Many Fingers Are Taken by Square-Head Jointers University o'f Oregon, Eugene, Ore., Alar. 10. A workmua in Umatilla coun ty was jointing a sniull piece of oak moulding. It caught and was thrown by the machine, causing his hand to drop into tho knivni. Five twelfths of the first, all the second, and the third, and one-third of the fourth fin ger were cut off. "Such an accident would have been impossible had a round-head jointer been used. Only a laceration 'Of the finger tips would have resulted," writes Ben Williams, statistician of the state industrial accident commission, to the state university members of the safety forum. The cost of this one ac cident to the commissfon is estimated equal to the expense of insliilling round head joiners in 23 establishments. Mr. O. P. Huff, slate labor commis sioner, lias ordered discontinuance of square jointer heads and replacement of them by round heads i(l all Oregon establishments, on ol' before March 1, 101.7. Seventy-one fingers were lost in Wis consin in one. year through us of square head jointers. The stale labor commissioner 1ms also ordered toe boards to be put on all walkways and "p'latfonns where practicable; solid wnhs to be put on all exposed printing press flywheels; discontinuance of use of circular saws that are cracked more than one-half inch deep; pluciug a valve on the ex haust of each unit where two or more steam-driven units exhaust into i com mon system, nnd the gum-ding of-nil water gunge glnsscs that are less than 10 feet above the working floor.
