A requisition wai issued hy Govern
or Withy-combe today on the governor
of California for the' extradition of Le
land Swift, who is wanted by the auth
orities of Malheur county. He is charged
with the crimes of larceny of a mare,
and forgery. Sheriff Hen. ,r. lirowu,
of Malheur county obtained the requi
sition. The city of Salem is now the own
er of a Ford car of the latest model,
purchased yesterday. The car is for the
use of tho street commissioner and i
to be re-modeled, into a truck and used
mostly in carrying men ami tools to
different parts of the city. The cur
was purchased by tho street committee
under tho authority given it at the lust
meeting of the city council.

The Philippine Islands and our duty
towards tho islands will be discussed
Sunday evening at the First Methodist
church by the Kev. I). (). Peterson, who
has -spent many years in that country
as missionary. Besides the work of tl-
eliurch in the islands and what has been
done, ho will discuss the bill introduced
in congress, giving independence to the
islands within a few years.

The Rosebud cluss of the Leslie M. K.
Sunday school met at the home of itr.
and -Mrs. E. A. Khotca at 1415 South
Liberty street, yesterday ufternoou and
organized a Queen Esther circle. Of
ficers were elected as follows: Lucille
Olson, president; I.eona Morgan, vice
president; Helen Peterson, correspond
ing secretary; Veda Rhoten, literary
secretary; Helen Frcy, mite-box secre
tary, and Mrs. Gibbs, teacher of the
class, was chosen director.
Brief talks were made by Mrs. l"n
derhill, Mrs. Gibbs and Rev. J. C. Spen
cer. Those present were: Mrs. A. A. Un
derbill, Mrs. Gibbs, Kev. J. C. Spencer,
Gladys Olsen, Lucille Olsen, I.eoun Mor
gan, Klsie Boynton, Florence Simons,
Alice Horhnrdt, Helen Fry, Anita Rob
erts, Helen Peterson, Cleo Walker, Mil
dred Judson, Ida Vogt, Adra Harmon,
Caroline Christanc and Kdith Senmster.
After the organization was completed
dainty refreshments were served by the
hostess.
The committee on lights of the city
council this morning granted to Gard
ner and Keene permission to erect un il
luminated clock in front of their place
of business on State street. The com
mittee being of the unanimous opinion
that, all gooil citizens should be home
and in bed before midnight, decided
that 12 o'clock at night wis late
enough to warn the wayfarer of the
passing of time.
Siphoning of the mill race at Churcl
street is under consideration by the
street committee of the city council,
but no definite action has as yet been
taken. Should the race be siphoned
it would lower the level of the street
nt this point about three feet. Siphon
ing is necessary to put the street in
condition for the proposed paving of
Church street from Stale to -Mission.
"Spinners of Speech" Is the special
reel, the property of the Pacific Tele
phone and Telogrnpn company, which
will bo shown Sunday evening nt the
First Congregational church. All the
tclephono operators and linemen anil
employes of the company have been giv
en nn invitation to attend tho services.

departments of the company.
Lamar Tooze, who came into promin
ence when he accompanied the Ford
peace party to Europe and who is at
present a student at the University of
Oregon, in response to tho invitation of I
