. THE MARKETS I
Hogs are higher today with' pork on
foot quoted at 6 3-1 to 7 cents and
dressed at 0 cents.
Commission houses quote Ipotntocs
at $1.75 and claim this is tho correct
price, according to tho Portland market.
Other buyers say they can buy at $1.25.
This seems to be the same old proposi
tion Of two prices, each claiming to be
right. A commission house bought a
load of potatoes at $1.25, and this ap
pears to be about tho price a farmer can
expect. The $1.75 quoted is tho selling
price nnd not buying of a commission
house. Tho market at present is rather
unsettled, and buyers are buying light.
Sugnr was advanced 15 cents a hun
dred today by the eastern refine'ries.

LAST RESORT
A Scotch minister in need of funds

Potatoes and Onions
Scarce In Portland
Portland, Or., Feb. T. A 'famine of
potatoes .iii.l onions is threatened, not
only in the Portland market, but along
the entire Pacific coast, owing to wea
ther conditions, it is practically impos
sible to make shipments from the coun
try. . While lrtlaiul wholesalers held
rather liberal stocks of potatoes nt tin
time the cold weather st.uted, the lack
of receipts from the country since then
have almost entirely cleaned up offer
ings here.
Potatoes arc being held firm at 1.75
a cental along the street for ordinary
to good quality, although some are sell
ing real poor quality down to $1.50.
Country interests, while not able to
m.ike deliveries, are asking as high as
$l.75(o!l.,S5 f. o. b. their stations lor
supplies, but this is higher than, the
trade here is selling nt.
Onion movement during the last
week was liberal, but little of this
stock reached the Portland market.
Holdings along the street are unusually
scant, and as high as $2.50 i cental is
being asked for No. 1 quality. Most
of the holdings consist of No. 2 stock,
which is selling generally at $2 a cen
tal. Eggs Are High.
The price of fresh eggs advanced to
40c a dozen in the wholesale district
during the day, a sheer movement of 3
cents a dozen from the previous d.iy's
trading.
The advance in tlie price, was due to
the fact that there are so few arrivals
of fresh stock nt this timo that it is
is impossible for wholesalers to fill
more than a small per cent of tho de
mand. We.ithei1 conditions are such that it
is impossible for the country to ship
regularly to the city markets, and as
there has been a shortage since .the
first of tiie year, the outlook is gloomy
so far as offerings during tho imme
diate future arc concerned.
Any sort of egg is in good demand in
the local trade at this time, with stor
age stock from the e.ist quoted as high
as 35 cents a dozen, an unusual height
for icehouse stock. Reports as to. re
ceipts of eastern eggs here- differ con
siderably. It is stilted that receivers
are trying to keep the receipt of these
supplies secret in an effort to boost
the juice still higher witli additional
scarcity talk.
