of Oregon are represented in the guth-
ering of fanners and lioine-makers at
the Agricultural college for the annual
short course work which began last
Monday. I'nlikn the work of farmers'
week the short enurso work is carried
on with the regular college work, and
it extends over a iieriod of four weeks,
Much of the work is gtven as class mid
personal instruction through lectures,
demonstrations and laboratory exer
cises. In many instances the training
is made a persona matter, specialists "f
tho college staff directing the work of
individuals in their chosen courses.
Eight courses are offered in fields
nnd crops, eight in farming combined
with raising, livestock und dairying,
1 1 in creamery work nnd dairying, five
in garment making and housekeeping,
five in food preparation, 10 in orchard
ing, and two in wood and metal shop
work.
In each of these selections fan be
made and more or less optional work
taken, ns in orcharding, where use i nn
be made of the special facilities offer
ed by the college in pruning or spray
ing or other specialty. By completing
thC prescribed work in any of the fore
going courses, students may receive a
certificate setting forth the work ac
complished. Some of the courses are
progressive and require a minimum of
work in specified subjects, as an en

The continued cold weather and silow
is forcing up the price of onions and
potatoes. Onions are now worth $1.75
nnd potatoes are up to the $1.25 mark.
Tliis is due to a great extent to the
fnet that fanners cannot bring in their
stocks, or fear to'open their pits. 'The
egg market in Portland is like the fa
mous Finnegnn, off 'again and on again.
Today it is up two cents, duo to the
u'nsual' 'weather conditions. A few days
ago the market was weak.

Son of Wealthy Man
Arrested For Forgery
Portland, Or., , Ian. 14. Charles W.
Morrison, son of a wealthy ttockmau
of Corona, M., is in tho city jail hert
today and his briile of two weeks is
milking desperate efforts to get him
out.
Morrison is accused of forging checks
and drafts to the extent of $11,500. The
money he used to defray the expenses
o'f his honeymoon.
; Two weeks ago Morrison was married
to Miss Allele II. Robinson in Los An
geles. He ha quarreled with his futh
eir who refused him money. Morrison
dmits that he cashed a forged check
for $2."ll' with which to 'buy Miss Rob
inson's engagement ring. Ho expected
to redeem the check but couldn't, so he
passed more. He Came to Portland bo
entrse his father bad given him tickets
to this city.
' ; Arrested late yesterday by detectives,
Morrison admitted practically nil the
charges against him. His fnthor has
opposed his marriage, ho said, and this
was one reason for their estrangement.
