Escapes After All-Night Flight
From Trailing Sub
marine
: Marseilles, France, Jau . 6. The
French liner Karnak. with S.'iO passen
gers arrived here today after an excit
ing flight before a submarine all night. I
rhe brought survivors of tho Iftitish !
liners Middleton and Abelia, sunk by j
submarines.
Many of the Karnak passengers were!
hysterical as they realized the possi
bility that the submarine would over
take them and blast their ship.
"We sighted her at dusk", said an
officer. 'The captain put on full steam j
ahead through a heavy storm, and our
bow was just splitting the big waves."
Passengers from the Abelia and Mid
dletnn, just rescued, were so terrorized
at their fresh peril that their condition
was pitiful. Some passengers stood at 1
the stern watching the chase, out most
of them were too frightened to do
other than cower in comers.
The submarine, an extremely large
one, was bothered by the heavy waves,
i and to this was due the fact that the
Karnak managed to outdistance her.
The Karnak passengers were ready
I'for emergencies. Lifebelts were don
Ined, and the boats were swung. Mean
(time, everybody remained fully dressed,
f f and sat on deck or in the smoking room

DO YOUR EYES BOTHER?
Thousands of pcoplo from childhood
to old age are chronic sufferers of Some
form of headache, and in a surprisingly
large percentage of these cases the
cause may be traced directly to an ab
normal condition of tho eyes. Some
times this condition is present nt birth;
sometimes it is the result of sickness
or accident later in life.
One of the most frequent causes of
this class of headaches are muscular
imbalance. The eyeball is controlled in
its movements by six external mnsclou,
nnd when any one or more of them
become weakened or fail to operate as
they should, tho result is defectivo
vision Vni an intensivo strain upon the
nervous centers, genorally manifested
by pains in the forehead, the temples
or in the back of the head or at the base
of the brain. If these conditions arc
allowed to continue they often result
in serious consequences, such as strab
ismus or cross eyes or in a general,
breakdown.
la treating such cases I have been
unusually successful. In addition to
the skill and knowledge which he has
acquired in my more than 33 years of
exclusive' practice of optometry, I.
have just received the latest and best
instruments to be obtained. Ho ii
thus enabled to develop and treat
weak muscles, restoring normal con
vergence of tho eyes and overcoming
diplopia or double vision. -
By mv methods, all this is dono
without" the use of the knife
formerly considered tho only way and
entirely without the use of drops or
drugs of any kind, as they arc not only
injurious but dangerous.
Consult me at onco in regard
to vour eyes and avoid the evil
results that follow delay in such mat
ters. Children's eyes especially should
be examined and treatment given as
early ns possible while their muscles
nro easily developed.
I guarantee satisfaction in every
respect.
