BUTTER MARKET STRONG.
Portland, Or., .Ian. 5. The butter
market has turned real strong, and is
some quarters there is more or less talk
of a probable advance in quotations
soon, although this view is not general
ly entertained by creamery interests.
With Kan Francisco and other lead
ing California muikets around 29c for
prints, which is within a mere fraction
of the local price, there is really no inr
centive for tho trade here to speculate
in the southern product. ,
The only thing that would forco Cal
ifornia butter in this direction at the
DioDioi l t is the inability of . the local
trade to secure its requirements of the
home product. At tho moment some of
the leading butter interests here . re
port their inability to secure enough
butteifat to tnke cure of their butter
requirements, but this condition is by
110 means general, and a real shortage
is not shown.
On the other hand this is tho time of
the season when California butter pric
es usually show liberal declines. For
that reason the northwest trnilo iS in
clined to go rather slow in its price
making; keeping at the same time one

W. I. Swank, general selling agent
for the association, snys that ho is not

is impossible to make shipments-from

Swank reports tho' last price at $1.25 a

MARKET BOOSTER, NOT
CROP BOOSTER, NEEDED
Editor Capital Journal: To those
who believe in fuir play and progress
the attitude of 'Judge Bushcy at the
taxpayers meeting Friday is good. Not
often do we see a public official with
tho stamina and courage to stand off
an organized attempt to secure a juicy
plum.
Judge Bushoy shows keen discern1
incut 111 perceiving that Marion county
docs not need the stimulus to over
production for which Mr. Chapin would
be employed: Why are certnin influen
tial city dwellers so much interested in
encouraging liirgcr crops on farms?
Have hot the returns to producers for
the current year been uncertain and
usually unprofitable? Though crops
were bountiful .prices to growers on
nearlv all variety of produce, were low
er than ever. WhyJ Because produc
tion is already greater than consump
tion. Why lower returns to the farm
er? Ilecauso tho commission forms, tho
wholesaler and retailer must have their
profits. Jt must be remembered that,
despite large crops, the consumer paid
as much as usual if nut more for pro
duce from the denier. '.;
Now the writer lias nothing against
tho merchants, but it musb.be said that
the present system of distribution is
too complicated and expensive. ir-
The public, market in Hhlem was op
ened only when conditions demanded
it. But what an infantile attempt! As
it is today it is 11 .joke from the view
point of prnctieul business methods.
The organized merchants must have
permitted it to start because they could
seo it could not last .under inexperi
enced conduct and unpleasant condi
tions. To imike certain of its failiuc,
moreover, the market was given an'un
suitable location. . , .
The result of these handicaps is that
Sulem will soon have a public market
no more unless Bouietiiing practical is
done arid that soon. ' . ' '
What is needed is not a crop in
crease expert, but a man is 'badly need
ed to devote his time anil efforts to
ward iuqiroving market conditions.
Tho nroduccrs ami' consumers of Ma
rion county would, without doubt, be
in favor of the office of county agri
culturist if its efforts were directed to
improve and perfect market conditions.
