AURORA HOP NOTES
Aurora dealers who have checked
up every bale of hops in the' Aurora
section state that the exact number of
bales in growers' hands outside the
association is 3,004. As this section
ordinarily produce about from one
etiglith to one-tenth of the state's crop,
there ought to be, according to their
figures, between 20,000 and 25,000 bales
left in Oregon, in the hands of growers
outside tho association, provided, that
the other hop sections are holding' the
same proportion of their hops that Au
rora is holding. It also appears from
their figures that the total crop will
exceed 100,000 bales.
Aurora dealers say they are revis
ing their figures upward in determin
ing tho 1015 crop. The following are
tho figures given in making up thair
latest estimate:
Shipped out 60,000 Males
In dealers' hands 8,000 bales
Association hops 20,000 bales
In growers' hands 20,000 baled
Total 114,000 bales
association hops 2H.000 bales
In growers' hands 8,000 bales
Which set of figures are correct will
be shown within a few weeks. Tho
quantity in growers' hnnds in tho An
rorn district indicntes, however, that
8,000 bales is fur too low for the whole
state.

Many Examinations For ' i
Civil Service Positions
Those wlio have an ambition to servo
the government in the railway railway
or mail servico will have to bide a wee,
as the postoff ice department has issued
a circular' stating that no examinations
wilibe held for this service' until after
July I, 1910.
But next January several examina
tions will be held fo government posi-

are mostly for specialists and the aver-,
age man would have but little chunco '
of passing. For instance, positions aro
open for that of radio inspector and tho
man-who can pass an examination with
a percentage that entitles iim to consid
eration, will bo paid a salary of $100 n
month, and later as much as $102.50 a
month.
The government is willing to pay .an
assistant surgeon $1,800 a year, with a
rniso to $2,400 after years of satisfac
tory service. A civil engineer is en
titled to the same nmount, but tho man
who secures a position of this kind,
must como in competition in un exam
ination, with specialists,
With tho almost certain assurance
that, ship building will be undortuken
on an extensive scale within a year- or
so, the government has need of those
who knaw how to design hulls, nnd who
cvor oan pnss tho examination in Seat
tle next mouth as a designer of hulls,
wil lbe' placed on Undo Sam's payroll
at $200 a month. .
A fish pathologist is worth $2,500
a year. As no ono but a specialist could
tako such an examination, the govern
ment is- liberal with the payroll. On
tho snmo supposition that a teacher of
agriculture does not. requiro years of,1
training, such a position is worth only
$000 a year.
These examinations will take place in
Seattle during January and anyone who
is 'ambitious to servo his conntry at a
fair remuneration, might apply to tho
local postoffico for additional informa
tion. (Manual Training School
