' DEER SEEN IN SILVERTON 1
Last Thursday afternoon as Herman
Messenger happened to look toward
Silver Creek from the window nt East

doe riso in the air and shoot over the
dam just above the bridge. She
swam as pretty as you please right
down under the steel bridge and on
over the lower falls and out of sight.
Tho deer was seen by others farther
up the stream, but Mr. Messenger was
the only one to see it glide through
town.
Some years ago a deer came over
about the same route and took refuge
in a clump of willows near Dr. Black
erby's dental office. Henry Grazer,
then a young man full of life and vigor
climbed out over the bank nnd lassoed
the deer. The deer was then taken
to the home of Joo Moscr and placed
in a small enclosure with a high fence,
one that .Toe said no living animal could
scale. The deer when liberated, walk
ed to the center of the arena, looked
around, collected its senses let out a
snort nnd over tho fence it went with
out the least troublo and bounded away.
Joe said, well I'll be d-d-dll-dggoned
if I ever thought a living animal could
jump that fence. No one has bobbed

mince pie in Oregon, we don't drink
it," commonted District Attorney Wal
tor Evans whon told thnt Attorney
General Farrar, of Colorado, hnd an

vent of prohibition January 1.
"Although the Oregon law specifies

local electric lino the only question
is just when the road will be extended
on to that city. Owing to tightened
financial conditions generally, the lino
has postponed its extension. Tho En
terprise recently printed an editoral
commentng on the refusal of the South
cm Pacific to connect with tho Wil
lamotte Valley Souther at Mt. Angel,
jMolnllu or Oregon City and the enlem
Capital Journal, arter reprinting the
remarks of The Enterprise, had the f ol
lowing to say:' '
'The proper solution of this difflcul
ty would be the extension of tho elec
tric road from Mount Angel into Salem
It was expected thnt this would bo
done during the present fall, but Prcsi
dent Dimick recently announced a
postponement of theso plans, owing to
tinancinl conditions.
"Salem ought to have direct railway
connection with tho .Mount Angol ter
ritory and much development would
follow tho construction of the road
through Howell Prnirie to this city. Wo
ao not Know wnat steps, if any, havo
been taken by the Commercial club to
co-operate with the railway officials,
but the project is well worth special at
tention, in order that it may not be
longer delayed than is absolutely neces
sary. "An electric railway to Oregon City
and Portland, via Mount Angel, would
be a great factor in' the growth of a
very important part of Marion
county."
