HISTORIC RACE TRACK BURNS.
Washington, Nov. 10. Efforts to
find tho stableman who is missing and
believed to havo perished in the fire
which destroyed tho historic Benuing's
race track on tho outskirts of Washing
ton had failed early today. Four other
stablemen who wero burned, are in a
serious condition. The grandstands
and fourteen stables were destroyed.
Ten vnlunblo race horses were burned
to death.

the improvements, the lowest was 10,

ment, as congress had appropriated only
$10,000. New specifications were
drawn and submitted, resulting in tlioj

A rainfall of 1.13 inches was record
ed by the government gauge at the O.
C. T. dock, for the 24 hours ending lit
8 o'clock this morning. This was an
unusually heavy rainfall, tho heaviest
since January 14 of this year, when'tae
record was 1.22 inches. The record for
1914 was on February 10, when the

The publicity committee of the Older
Boys Conference to be held in this city
November 20, 27 and 28 nro sending
out letters to all parts of the Western
Oregon district, giving information to
the young men of the many Y. M. C.
A. organizations, and telling of the
work of the coming conference. About
000 invitations have been sent out. One
of tho most important events of the
conference will be the father and sons
banquet to bo given Saturday evening,
November 27, nt the Y..M. 0. A. gym

The first try-out for the debating
team of the high Bchool will take place
Thursday evening in the. high school
building, when nine candidates will dis
play their oratorical ability. Tho sub
ject to be debated is the ouo adopted
by the Oregon high school debating
laague, "Resolved, That the United
States should ndopt tho essential fea
tures of the Swiss system of military
training and service." Saleih is in the
North Willamette district, and the first
debates will bo held early in January.

More than $175,000 was paid for
clover seed this fall in the counties of
Marion, Polk and Linn, according to
Barley O. White who is familiar with
clover conditions, as the firm of D, A.
White and Sons alone purchased 000,000
pounds of clover seed in this county,
nnd 500,000 pounds in Linn county. The
average price this year was Hi cents,
compared to 11 an 12 cents one year
ago, and this year's crop was fullv
doublo that of 11(14. Tho failure of
tho clover seed crop in the east and
light foreign shipments was the cause
of the higher prico this year.

a short time today at the Marion hotel,
to meet n part of prominent Japanese
travelers who passed through on the

leading financiers of Japan, O. Zumoto,
a wealthy journalist, and Z. Horikoshi,

team, now regarded ns one of the cham
pion teams in the northwest, in its class,
will piny the Salem high school toam
in this city Thanksgiving day. As
the Salem team is also a winning team,

which is the champion team of the

this is taken, the game will take place

cussion. President Hamilton urges that

Ruth Kedzle Wood, of Cherry Valley,
N. V., who is a Fellow of tho Royal
Geographical Society of London, and
a Fellow of the American Geographical
society, besides honorary members of
the Aluskn Alpino club, writes tho com
mercial club that sho intends to write
a book for tourists nnd would like ldio-
tographs of Salem and vicinity. The
book will oo published by Dodil, Mead
and Co., New York.
The public safety commission of
Portland, has asked permission of See-'
rotary of State Olcott and tho co-oper-
ation or tins olticial to send out pam
phlets containing educational talks on
public, safety to the auto owners of the
stnte with their license tags which arc
sent out from the office of tho secre
tary of state. The letter states that
it is possible to corral school children,-
policemen and street car men for the,
talks but that if a meeting were ad
vertised for auto owners that not a
"Corporal's guard" would come out
to hear a safety talk. It was thought
that the auto owners of the state might
be reached in a better manner by the
pahphlcts which would also contain the
road laws of the state and city nnd the
commission expressed tiio willingness
to have the pamphlets printed and for
warded to the secretary of state's of
fice if he would mail them out with the
license tugs.
